So, I'm on the lookout for some decent draped bust cents/half cents for my type set. I haven't searched for them often, but it is quite difficult to find nice ones. This one struck me as very pleasant. What would you grade, and what is your opinion of value?
That is nice! IMHO XF, easy. The reverse has a little red left. I bet it is (even more) beautiful in person!:hail: :bow: BTW, title is labled cent, you have pictured half cent.
Wow... pretty pricey in XF-40 (maybe $800 to $900)... but appears too nice to get into the VF range (with an easier to handle $200 to $300). Perfect for my type set!
That's a coin I'd REALLY like to see in-hand. From the pics, I would consider it -- but only if offered with a no-questions-asked return policy.
I'm a firm believer that coins of that value HAVE to be slabbed before I'll buy them. I agree with the XF grade. It's a very nice looking coin. Since you are looking for a coin for your type set that probably means you are not an expert in this series. And you probably don't want to several years becoming and expert just to buy one coin. Same way with me. When I bought one for my type set I got one that was slabbed (NGC). Now I'm 95+% confident that I got what I paid for. (Can't be 100%; plenty of evidence that even the major TPGs miss the mark now and then.)
I'm sure it is. This pic is scanned, and leaves a washed out look. Scanning makes almost all coins look harshly cleaned.
My guess-timate: sharpness 25, average+ flan, net EAC 15 Recovering from an old cleaning, a few minor rim bumps, minor gash in drapery, solid fields. Nice coin ! This one is Cohen-1, Breen-3, rarity 1. CQR quotes about $100-120. Market conditions vary, of course.
nice and brown I'd call it a VF myself, but there is about $150 jump between VF and XF around $210 to $360, so be careful.
My standard response. Use a dark, non-reflective background when you scan and that will solve a good part of your washed out look.
Well i am comparing your 1806 to my 1807 graded Anacs EF 40, and i would say based on that your 1806 is close, to but not quite EF40. I am tending toward VF30-35 for detail. 900 has it right, the planchet is better than average, so IF it has not been cleaned, and taking minor defects into account your are in VF 25-VF30 territory. Say $240-360. IF it has been cleaned, then its like 900 says. May i sugget you also look at what Shawn Yancey has to offer - fair prices (with a discount at the moment from what i saw yesterday) and accurately graded coins. You will know what you are getting. regards, Eduard
