Hello Coin Talkers! My Irish grandfather gave me silver dollars as a child. Only a 1928 Philadelphia minted Peace Dollar and some dimes remain. I am looking into selling them, but it sounds like getting the dollar graded might be costly and time consuming. Can anyone give me a ballpark grade of it from these photos on picasa? Probably to sell it I will need an official grade. Thank you for any advice! http://picasaweb.google.com/hbcoins/20090428?authkey=Gv1sRgCMTpnKLe_pzVRQ&feat=directlink -hbcoins (Belinda)
It has a lot of detail but the major boo boo on the back will hurt its sale price. Details wise it has XF/AU details... but the boo boo will make it an net VF in my opinion.
AU 50, but a bad mark on the reverse. Realize my grading leaves a lot to be desired, but I'm pretty familiar with this coin.
The good news : 1928 "it was a very good year" - it's a key date. In top condition, it's very valuable. The bad news : this one has been harshly cleaned. Definitely do NOT send this one in for third-party grading.
Still a nice coin , It looks cleaned to me too but really can't say for sure because of the small photos , You could send it to NCS , ANACS , then at least it would be authenticated . rzage
Hi 900 Fine. Thanks for your input! I am the culprit in the cleaning department. I dipped it in Tarnex. I didn't know any better! It looked cleaner to me. The gouge was there from the start. Its origin is a mystery. -hbcoins
Shame, shame HB......:smile All kidding aside, most folks in these parts take a dim view when it comes to cleaning coins. Acetone, maybe. Tarnex? Uh, uh....
You're right it'll never be a money maker , but it will make a nice filler for somone who otherwise couldn't afford one . Rusty:hatch::hammer:
I am living and learning folks! Thanks for all your input! I'll need to mull this over to figure out what my next step will be.
That's the main thing , your learning , most of us have cleaned coins harshly for a lack of knowing better . You'll learn a lot at CT . rzage:thumb:
We gotta plan.....Learning is what this hobby is all about. Enjoy your experience on these boards.....:smile
I too was wondering about the cleaning, but thought it might be the photos and not the coin. It is a '28 and will always have some value.
