Bicentennial quarters

Looking at the stuff I got from my father and I found 5 coin tubes filled with circulated bicentennial quarters. Though I like them, I don't see any reason to keep so many. The mintage is extremely high, and people have hoarded them from the get go. I was going to perhaps keep one or maybe two tubes (because I like them) and turn in the rest for $ (to buy other coins, of course).

Anyone have a different opinion? I just can't see circulated ones ever having a high premium...

They were minted for 2 years and hoarded like crazy. I would cash them in.

You might keep an eye on ebay. You might be able to get a little more than face value for them but it might not be worth the effort.

Driving to the bank for face value is the easy way to unload them. While you are at the bank, see if they have any rolls of 2009 dimes or nickels ..those will be hot on ebay before to long ...watch and see.

Spend them quick before your money loses more value.

If circulated there is no reason to keep them.

I agree here except for one point. These coins came from your dad and thus may have some sentimental value to you. If you want to keep some (or all) then do it. But, they will never have collector value.

Yes, that is why I will always keep at least a tube of them. But 5 is way too many...

I'm not so sure. For one: the premiums on ebay are "mint wrapped rolls", not regular rolls.

Granted, the 1st 2009 Lincoln cent is an exception -- but that's because it's the first design change in 50 years, and it will never appear again . . . but nickels, and even more so dimes . . . there's nothing unique about the design in 2009.

But I'm new at guessing values . . . what do others think?

First of all, there are no "mint wrapped rolls" of dimes and nickels.

Second of all, you might have missed the thread reporting on the CoinWorld article in which it was stated that production of these coins have ended for the year.

It's only the end of April.

Once word hits the main stream, all the nervous Nancys will run to get a roll or two to put back. They will find that when they go to the bank and inquire that the bank will not have any nor will they admit to getting any in.

This will only raise more panic in the hearts of those looking to make a buck off folks who think that millions of coins made for circulation are somehow "rare" simply because you can't get a roll at the bank.

I bet that if you could find a roll of 2009 nickels and put it up on ebay today, you could get $50+ for it because you would be the only one with a roll.

It has nothing to do with design at all.

That sounds like a good idea. Are they all average circulated? If not, I'd save the best examples you could find and dump the rest, if you wish to keep some. As common as they seem, when was the last time you found an example in change that was better than F?

I agree. Don't just arbitrarily get rid of the rolls. Save the best coins. Also make sure there are no S mint coins in their. You may have some silver.

Right . . . that's was part of my point. "Mint wrapped" seems to drastically increase values right now.

I did see it. Quite a surprise!

Price, of course, depends on both supply (or perceived supply) and demand.

What I was suggesting is that the lack of a unique 2009 design will reduce some of the demand. Further, the other coins are getting all the publicity, so that the supply as perceived by many will not seem as rare as the Log Cabin's, etc.

But, hey, you might be right. I'm a newbie when it comes to speculating in future prices. And I've never seen non-unique design non-mint wrap rolls command high prices. But I'll readily admit I've never seen the mint announce a cessation of production for a common coin so early in the year, either.

That's what keeps life interesting . . . and us collectors on our toes!

    So, let's test the hypothesis.

Has anyone seen any 2009 nickels or dimes on eBay? Do we see any movement yet?

Ebay is a very simple website to search. You can answer your own questions with a little initiative. Teach a man to fish and he will never go hungry. Go to ebay.com and type 2009 dime in the "find" field and hit enter.

    Good luck grasshopper

Same here. None of the banks in a 5 block radius have any 09 coins.

Yeah . . . but I can't reach ebay during the day (blocked from my worksite!)

In any event, for this evening: nothing for "2009" under nickels or dimes.
