Old Dan, Is this a serious flaw in the grading, or in the collectors who are willing to pay huge differences in price for small, difficult to detect, and somewhat subjective differences in condition? Maybe there are too many grades with fuzzy boundaries between them. Maybe expecting absolute consistency in grading tiny differences over large spans of time by different individuals is an unrealistic expectation.
Do a search on this forum, or any other, for the term "market grading" - (use the quotes). It'll go a long way to explain the points made by Mr. Bowers and OldDan in his post.
I did the search on "market grading" and there is a lot of valuable material there. There are some good insights into the various TPG styles, and this helps me a lot. I also like the idea of having all services use the same technical grading criteria for all coins instead of a variety of standards. It would be a tremendous advance for the hobby. But I have a feeling that there is as much chance of this happening as reunifying the world championship boxing titles under one organization.
Well Cloudsweeper I'd be inclined to agree with you - as long as WE, the collectors, continue to allow it. But on the day that we all decide to stand together - and not allow it any longer. Then it will change.
