'45-D(?) Washington quarter help - please..

I am the newbie of all newbies but this looked like a good place for some friendly help. Be kind because I'm admitting that I don't know much about coins. I have a very unremarkable Washington quarter, no better than or somewhere between AG3 or G4. But it has an oddity at the MM that perhaps someone can identify for me. There is some damge to the MM that I don't know if it might be post-mint mechanical damage or perhaps a bad planchet or a strike error and I hope than some of you might help identify what I'm looking at. There doesn't appear to be any other similar damage on either side of the coin. Any thoughts? Thx...

I'd call that a 3 or lower because of the rims. As for the MM I can't tell

 

Thanks Danr. I'll buy that, but it's the mm damage that has me stymied. Ever seen anything similar?

 

Never saw anything like it, but it has to be an S.

If it was a D the top left corner would be straight, and this is rounded.

Thanks for the welcome and for taking a look and also for the feedback. My mind tried to make an S out of it too but the raised left edge appears to be continuous top-to-bottom although it does fade a bit in the center. Could be the tail of a serif S I guess. Still a mystery.

 

At some point over the last 64 years, somebody wanted to "hole" the coin but after starting the hole with a nail punch, he/she decided to spend it instead.

What does the obverse look like?

 

Perhaps...but it would have been a very small punch and a half-hearted attempt since the damaged spot is very very small. The obverse shows no such damage, just similar wear. I'll post a pic tomorrow. Thanks... If the concensus is post-mint mechanical damage I'll drop it in the body bag.

 

I'm going to suggest that the problem in the MM area is because of someone trying to add/change/delete it.
Since doing such to a coin this inexpensive doesn't make sense I'm going to further suggest it was practice for making the change to create a more expensive coin.
Like changing a 1932 to a 1932-D or 1932-S.

Your quarter has been hit, punched, shot, gouged, poked, corroded, run-over, clamped, stomped on, or who knows but I can assure you it's not an error of variety.

 

Now that's a theory that makes sense to me. Looks like there's some general agreement that this coin has been tampered with so thanks for your help and this one goes AG and into the body bag.
