I was looking through my Thomas Jefferson Coin and Currency set today and I noticed that I had a 1976 $2 star note in the set. I have actually had 3 of these sets and this was the only one that had a star note. Would this add any extra value to the set? I know nothing about paper money, but I thought it was interesting and a neat find.

So how much value is typically added?

Saw $32 for a reg and $43 for a star in e-bay completed auctions. There is currently a BIN for $85 and one for $52 did not sell. What happened, the price of these sets came way down?

I dont know what the sets sells for, but i was looking for a decent priced set myself. a star note in the set would certainly make it more appealing to me.

Sorry Jaceravone, i cant help with exact premiums on the set either.

I agree. I think if I was going to pick up none of these sets I'd hold out for a star note. So, I'm sure there is some premium for it.

I will check when I get home tonight. I remember the sn being somewhere in the 500000 range. It was somewhere like 502xxx. Not a fancy number, but defintely one of the lowest star notes that I have personally seen.... but I don't collect them so I am not actively looking.

I am more interested in the nickel in the set. On every set I have owned or seen, the nickel has exhibited some of the most gorgeous toning on a nickel that I have seen. The obverse is usually satiny/silver like what one would look like today and then the reverse is like a satin bronze. Sometimes they are patchy, but if you get one which has a full toned reverse, it is just plain gorgeous. I will also try to get pics up tonight.

Sorry DJ, the note is part of the complete 3 item set from the mint. Had it been separate, it would be all yours. :smile

I turned my set inside out in hopes that one day the obv would look like the rev.

Noost, there is just something about how one side is toned and the other is not that is very attractive to me. Also, love the strikes on these issues. I haven't found a bad strike at all. Solid features usually with a full 6 steps. Love it! :thumb:

Are those the sets that contained the SMS Jefferson nickel?

    Yes.

Here are some pics. The reverse pic does not do the coin justice. I don't know why, but all my reverse pics were somewhat blurred. The entire reverse of the coin in a bronze satiny finish. Love it.

So, this set sells for between $30-$45 it sounds like...I thought the SMS nickel was worth more than that alone.
