Actually, I was rather surprised. I really expected them to just buy it back. I did not think that they would be able to find a replacement.
Replacement or buying it back are virtually the same thing. But they know that most collectors would rather have a replacement than the money. So if they can find one, they replace them. It's not as hard as you might think. They have considerably greater resources than you or me.
That is good to hear. I worry sometimes buying NGC copper, I do, but still I worry something might happen likes this.
NGC's guarantee on copper, bronze, or copper-nickel coins is a still limited one. The guarantee expires on the ten year anniversary of the date of encapsulation. Neither does the guarantee apply to coins graded prior to April 1st, 2000.
True enough, but if a coin is going to turn in the slab, it's going to do it before 10 years passes. And if it happens after that - it's your own fault for not storing them properly.
its amazing what a company like ngc does sometimes but you are spot on ahem you are forgetting that the environment gets polluted every year and that can affect the coins. look at the templ of athens more damage in the last 100 years than the 1000 years preceeding that
It's not amazing. They did it so they could compete with PCGS. Prior to 2002, maybe'03 - NGC did not guarantee copper at all. I'm not forgetting anything - that's where proper storage comes in.
I received my replacement today. It is definitely an improvement over the original and I am pretty sure it can be a 65. However, I am not too sure about the red part. What are your comments. I know true color is about the hardest to pick up (particularly with copper), but I think I got close. The obverse is mostly a dirty red at best. The reverse is a deep red, but nearly all the devises are again a dirty brown at best on top.
Rlm, I know your pic style, dont be offended. It dulls coins, you cannot seem to catch the luster and " mini cartwheel" of an UNC. Your circs are dead on. I would guess that it made you money, but a 65 red is a toughie. You are the only one here that can judge that. Surfaces and strike are very 65ish, but to get full red, it has to be there, and that coin does not appear to have it. NGC seems to disagree, AND, thats a new holder after the new " tight standards " sooooooo, I am out of thoughts on this. You have a fresh 65RD, sigh, take a deep breath and thank the coin gods that NGC is such a 1st class organization.
Took it to APMEX. 3 of them looked at it there and all agreed it was red/brown. So I called NGC again. Again very pleasant, but this time she had to get some help. Will be sending it back and they are paying the shipping.
the 1924-D NGC MS-65 BR I have sold a cpl times is going to NCS as soon as it is returned to me........again I'll keep you posted
They received the coin on the January 29th. Called today basically to tell me they had not forgot about me, I guess. The agreed that their replacement was not red and they are still looking for replacement. He did not sound overly optimistic that they would succeed replacing it.
AWESOME! I had no idea they did that I am going to send my one of my high grade jeffersons over to them that I have been disappointed with, carbon spots on the back pretty bad. They said the guarantee is good even though it is an older slab because it is silver. Thanks!
After 3 months of waiting, I called NGC to find out what was going on. Today, I got this response; My gut reaction would be to take the 65RB and the cost differential, but that greatly depends on the pricing they use. NGC valuation is $1060 for red and $325 for red/brown at their site (numisMedia Value). Has anyone been through this before to give me some clues how to handle this? Are these the prices they use? Can I negotiate? Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.
NGC explains the process somewhat on their website, so I would recommend going there and doing a little reading. They do not say where the values come from, but they do say that they are the sole determinates of value(s). Neither you, nor any other entity have any input as to value or how it is determined. I have never used this feature myself, but I have heard reports of others - some happy with the settlement and some not happy. Good luck!
Just got off the phone with NGC again. I cannot say they were the most prompt, but they have got to be one of the friendliest and easiest I have ever had the pleasure to work with. Anyhow, I am going to get the last coin back as a 65RB + $450. All-in-all, I feel that is not far off the going prices and, especially considering that I only had >$200 in this deal, I am very happy with it.
Exactly what I would have done! However, I would have grilled them on sending you an RB coin labeled RD and hoping you go away.
