I am brand new to the forum as a poster so first I would like to say hello to everyone. I read the error section of the forum about 2-3 times a week but have not found anything cool enough to post yet. But, two weeks ago I bought a 1913 buffalo nickel type 1 at a local show. While looking at it I noticed a doubling in the facial features and eye. I look through a few cherrypicking books but found nothing. Can anyone tell me anything about it? I would greatly appreciate any information. Thanks for your time, Chandler
WELCOME to the forum :hail:. What I am seeing is machine doubling, that's probably why you don't see this type of doubling in the cherrypickers book. Not collectible.
It does look like machine doubling, but how do you explain the variation in MD in the same area. Remember this is the whole obverse die moving, so the green arrows look like MD, but why aren't the areas indicated by the red arrows also demonstrating the same displacement in the approximately same direction and in some cases in between areas of MD? Such as the top of LIBERTY, the edge of the nostril and bridge of the nose, etc. Could this be from repair of the outline? Probably is MD, but it does bother me some to say that assuredly. No offense intended to those who say MD. JIm
Hi and WELCOME, It's just machine doubling as suggested. The way the coin releases from the die or the way the die "chatters" can effect things inconsistently. Although I can't say for sure without the coin in hand, the "etched" look of the surface of the coin indicates that it has been acid treated. probably Nick-A-Date or something similar. Thanks, Bill
Always suspect machine/strike doubling when Always suspect machine/strike doubling when the profile or face is involved - it's not a rule as there are a few true doubled dies with similar type doubling but not many - you generally will find most doubled dies are around the outside lettering/numbering such as date, motto, Liberty etc.
Thank you all Sorry for the late Thank you but I have been working a lot lately (baby on the way). Thank You everyone for all the great information. So it is not as rare as I thought it would be but it is still a cool coin. Thanks again everyone, Chandler
