I have a Dansco of Kennedy halfs that I received from my father with 2 holes......the last two: 2007 D and P. Two questions: Where is the best place to fill these holes. I've checked with banks and hardly any have half dollar coins. My local coin shop doesn't have them. On ebay they go for 5 bucks or so when you include shipping and I can't see paying that for such recent coins. Anyone else collect these and if so, what is your source? Secondly, I was thinking of not getting the next Dansco page and letting my collection stop at 2007. I can't see any reason to continue them as they seem very hard to come by. Anyone care to share the upside? Thanks for your thoughts...
Get the 2007 mint sets. The halves should be easy enough to find that way. You may even be able to sell teh rest back.
http://cgi.ebay.com/2007-Kennedy-Ha...yZ139810QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem 2007 P & D, straight from mint rolls, untouched by human hands.. $3.75 with free shipping. After the seller subtracts auction fees, final sale price fees, paypal fees, pays for the shipping and then sends you $1.00 face value coins that are BU from mint rolls, is that really a lot to ask? Will they make even a $1.50 profit? Maybe, maybe not. I'm surprised (but thankful) that sellers are willing to sell that cheap. Nobody ever factors in their time for shipping and handling either. What if you were selling BU half dollars? Would you enjoy handling them packaging them, driving to the post office, filling out envelopes and communicating with people for 50 cents profit? $1 profit? Better hope the post office is close or you just lost that in gas and donated your time. You're lucky you only need the 2007s. They get a lot more expensive the further you go back. I'm up to date now and realize it's a lot cheaper to collect them as they come out than wait for 5-10 years to pass.
Satin Finish Many people are unaware that the mint sets(from 2005 to present) contain special satin finish coins. That leaves the only place to aquire a business strike coin is in rolls.
Your bank can order boxes of them for you, 500.00 a box should only take a week. You should be able to find one in there I but boxes all the time looking for silver they are fun to go through either way.
So, order the box, pick through it, then put the rest back in and you are out nothing but time? That is cool if they will do that. Did I understand you correctly?
Yep, easy as pie. Just go to the bank ask if you can order a box of halves. They usually take about a week to get in. Sometimes you might have to try a couple banks but they can all order for you. Then pick them up go through them and just return the ones you dont want back to the bank. I used to buy several boxes a week searching for silver. I would usually average about 5.00 face per box of 90% silver. I have even gotten rolls with franklins on the end You might want to turn in the ones you dont want to a different bank so the bank you bought them from will get them for you again in the future if you need.
Do not expect 2002 or newer halves from the bank. These are business strikes not released for circulation. If you find one, consider yourself very lucky! I found most of these on ebay for about $2 a piece shipped. Be patient and watch ebay often or visit your local dealer.
So let me get this straight. Now you're willing to tie up $500, search through 1000 Kennedy halves in hopes of finding a 2007 P & D that aren't completely beat up, and then spend the time to go back and cash them in? As opposed to having two, BU perfect ones sent to your door for 3.75 shipped and spending no time? I've said it before and I'll say it again. Searching for silver is a waste of time. Everybody's been doing it for 45 years. Eventually it has to hit a point in time where it just isn't worth it anymore. No matter how much of an optimist you want to be. They're just not valuable enough for the amount of time it takes to find a single one. IMO. Oh yeah, quartertapper is right. The last several years haven't even been released for circulation. So not likely they'll be in there anyway.
I agree as far as the time involved vs just picking them up of ebay. I personaly enjoy silver hunting on occasion. I have found as much as a full rolll in one box recently so in my opinion its sonething fun to do and occasionaly profitable.
Well, these coins can be picked up for a few dollars each. Why not just stop in your local dealer. You can get them online but you'll pay for shipping & handling & well, it seems silly to do so unless your local dealers don't have any.
As I said in my first post, my local coin dealer doesn't have any. I'm sure there is another shop somewhere that I could drive to, and I can check. I was wondering if a 2007 could be found elsewhere, as to me, a coin that could be found from 2 years ago had a pretty high premium on ebay. Now that you've shared that they didn't do the business strikes for those years, I'll probably do the ebay thing. However, doing the $500 at the bank and sorting through it sounds like a complete blast, not a waste of time. The thrill of the hunt is a great motivator to me. I'll never think of it as time per hour, because it isn't that way for me at all. Thanks.
After going through $700+ in halves, not only didn't I find any silver, the latest dates were 2001's. I think you should try the suggestions above and wait to you find the right one for you. Bruce
If you want the 2008's Kennedy's please PM me and I will sell them to you at face!! They were pulled from US Mint Rolls!! Sorry I am all out of the 2007's.
Please see post #3 in this thread. Click the link. The recent ones are still pretty reasonable. I bought a lot of them and am currently up to date through 2009. The further you go back, the more of a premium there is. Another thing to keep in mind when considering what sellers are charging for these is that like everything else, you can't just buy Kennedy rolls for face value. They sell at a high premium straight from the mint. So even that would factor into what profit was left after a sale.
