1922 peace dollar with a strange imprint

    I recently happened upon a strange coin.It resembles a peace dollar in every way,but has a deep strike of letter P in the neck of lady liberty.Can anyone help me with this?Thank you ,Buddha

    It sounds like post mint damage. Likely someone stamped the coin with something. But, we would need a picture to be sure.

    As noted probably a post stamp. Got to have a photo for sure.
    Then too maybe the Mint called that one back to stamp it with a P so people would know it's a Post letter added. :)
    Or the P stands for Peace Dollar, Private coin or many other things. :smile Now if that was a N then I would suspect it was an atempt to signify the Neck of the person.
    Of course these are all silly things so we do need a photo.

    Carl,

    I know your above post was in jest but the Subtreasury used to counterstamp coins. If a gold coin or a silver coin was found to be too light (either due to excessive circulation wear or filing, clipping, etc.) they would stamp the coin with an 'L' to indicate the coin is Light and return it to the depositor. The depositor could then sell the coin for its gold or silver content; they could not spend it because it was general knowledge back then that coins counterstamped with an 'L' were light.
