It was great to meet the CT's at the MSNS show, putting a face with a name really helps me being new here and all.

I agree that there wasn't a lot to buy. Found a reasonable 1917 S, and a neat Lincoln plaque, but that's about it. There were lots of other Lincolns I drooled over but prices seemed a bit (or a lot) high.

Advertisement: TheNoost and I have another contest coming, so keep an eye on your favorite CT forum. (Hopefully tomorrow)

Jack: I wish I knew you were hitting the casino. I'd've been there!!! Maybe in the fall.

Please post an image of the plaque when you can.
I'm a sucker for most anything Lincoln.

Yeah, I probably wasn't gone but I may have been out to lunch with my wife and son. They came to pick me up and we went to Buddy's for pizza & pasta. By the time we got back, around 1:30, dealers were already packed and gone. Jim McGuigan had skedaddled, which is a shame, because I wanted to talk to him at EAC but didn't get to. I did get to spend some quality time with Rod Widok and Tom Reynolds, as well as a bit of chatting with Rod's wife Joan and Don Valenziano. I saw a lot of half cents, but none worth buying at the prices being asked. A decent-looking corroded 1794 C8 (I believe), but it was in a SEGS VF slab, and the guy wanted VF money for it. About half what he was asking would have been closer to fair.

This had to have been the saddest MSNS I've been to yet.

I haven't bought any coins at an MSNS show since the very first I went to. For me, it's more socializing and seeing what isn't there to cherry.

I'll see you all again in November if not before.

    ldhair, here you go....
Here are pics of the two Lincoln items I picked up at the MSNS show.

The first rectangular plaque is 1 1/2" w x 2" tall. The back is smooth. Haven't done any research on it yet.

The second item is a disc, 2 3/4" in diameter. On the edge of Lincoln's sholder is the name C Calverley, the artist. Charles Calverley (1833-1914) sculped the original plaque which is 10 1/2" in diameter, this is a small replica manufactured by the Medallic Art Co. of New York. They are still in business but located in Nevada presently.

Well the wife and I made it back from the MSNS show. Had a great time especially meeting with fellow CT's. The show as everyone said was a bit slow but everyone was very friendly and informative. Actually sat down with a couple of fellows and they gave my wife and I a few lessons in regards to coins and paper money. My wife knows nothing about coins or paper money but came along as a good sport and didn't complain once. She has a new appreciation of coins and their cost. Had a great lunch with borgavan. The food was lacking but the company was outstanding. My wife and I loved his toned nickels. Now my wife is a tone loving freak. She actually bought me the 1904-O because of the toning. Bernard had a decent 1916 D mercury which my wife could not believe what a person would pay for a dime. Bernard and I just laughed when she said that. Well here are some of the coins I bought. Also got a 1956 proof set, a 1914 D lincoln in Fine and about 12 other coins and 3 notes. Had a great time making plans for the fall show.

    regards Jerry/Brenda

    Thanks.
Both are really cool but the first one is one I have never seen.
I'll see if I can find something about it.

Anything you can find will be appreciated. Here's a cool link to a set of books, The Collected Works of Abraham Lincoln http://quod.lib.umich.edu/l/lincoln/
I have a set of these books, makes for some interesting reading.

Hey guys, thats good looking stuff there.

Saying goodbye to Mi now, I'll be back on AZ dirt soon, but I will plan on making the fall MSNS.

It was a blast meeting everybody, and see you all in the fall.

I am the guy front viewer's left. Mesa is front far right. Next to me in the boonie hat is Noost, if I am right. Who's everyone else?

I am sorry that I do not visit here often enough to stay in the loop. If Arizona Jack had not seen my nametag -- MSNS Webmaster / MIKE/ Mike Marotta -- and said "Hi" I would have missed this.

My camera did not work because it was full. See some of those snapshots on the MSNS website www.michigancoinclub.org by clicking on Spring 2009 Convention Highlights.

I bought silver. At PHIL AFTOOR's table, there was a bargain bin washtub of world crowns. I found two nice 19th century pieces, a 1900 Hungarian 5 Korona and an 1856 France 5 Franc, both in VG/Fine but with honest wear and nice, original surfaces. I bought 12 pieces in all, but the rest were moderns. For me, of those, the coolest were the Egyptian 1 pound and 50 piasters (both crowns; NCLT silvers) commemorating the Aswan Dam project. (For me, numismatics is about capitalism, so, while those were state projects, they were cool engineering that delivered electricity.

I also found bargains with DANIEL'S COINS AND CURRENCY. Daniel is a new dealer, but he traced his great-grandfather's coin shop Eagle Coins in Detroit 1910-1950. His story is on the MSNS Website in the Articles Archive.

I spent a lot of time with the exhibits. You learn a lot that way. You can read books and I do and I recommend them highly, but nothing beats seeing the material. Former MSNS President Chuck Fenwick displayed FRN Spider Press and Souvenir work from ANA Conventions.

MSNS has a major effort on to bring in members. For your $15, you get your choice of a Krause book, typically a $30 value. The award-winning MichMatist costs us $18 per member per year to mail out. Those expenses are why we place a lot of effort on the conventions. We have the Fall show to ourselves, but the Spring show is often head-to-head with someone else and this time it was CINC, the Chicago show.

I picked up two of the freebie mags MSNS were giving out to read on the plane home. I will be joining shortly, I want to do my part to help support this club. Watch for my name on the membership list soon:)

I also added the MSNS elongated cent to my collection at registration, then , on a whim I picked up 4 more elongated " Detroit " cents at the airport machines. Add a $1 Motor City Casino chip, the rack of slabbers I bought and I came home a happy camper.

    See you in the fall.

Mike, I am the guy in the back row with the hat on. hey I have purchased a few things from Danny, he is a good kid and pretty good at what he is doing. I believe he has a shop over on the east side. (Shelby Twnshp)?

Anyway, yes I would encourage all Mi. coin collectors to join the MSNS. I did in the fall (I think it was) and the mag is well worth the price of joining in itself. They do remind when membership is expiring don't they?

Jack, when you come back bring more cents and quarters to the airport you missed 12 of them. LOL. There are a total of 16 there. There are 2 machines at the Henry Ford Store, 1 at the Motown store and 1 at Michigania Store, in Concourse A, near gate A23. Keep Smashing my friend!
