I recently purchased a lot of quarters that included a 1964. The coin has a type B reverse (proof reverse)... How can I tell if this coin is simply a proof or is the rarer business strike with type B reverse... are there any obverse markers or distinguishing features on a 1964 proof that distinguish it from a business strike,..... The coin does look proof'ish. Mirrored fields and very sharp obverse details....
Bahabully, first let me say, welcome to CT. Second, Quoting from the Cherrypickers guide vol.2, "The reverse die was inadvertently produced using a Type B hub, intended for the use with Proof dies from 1936 to 1964 and from 1968 to 1972. The Type B reverse exhibits enhanced eagle feathers, and greater separation between the E and S of States." I don't know of any really distinguishing factors other than the mirrored finish, but maybe the above may help. This is one variety that can very easily cherrypicked since most dealers and collectors do not look for this variety. Good luck.
