    Hello all,
I am having a slow day. So I thought I would play with my steelies. Yesterday my wife got out Tarn-X to clean her silverware...any how I decided to drop a steelie in....left it overnight and this morning I went to check on what it did....and low and behold it is sparkling like it came from the mint.....It was very dirty and nasty...will post pics later......its funny it states do not use on steel on the bottle.....after what it says I decided to play...or in tech terms experiment.....:smile....I started at 8 this morning I got 10 done with very nice results......just alittle FYI......Under a 10x loupe it looks great...under a 300x stereo star zoom microscope by reichert I see no tell tale signs of a cleaning......weird.....
    I keep you posted.....

I'll be interested to see your results.
Since you say the surfaces look very good, I'm curious.
I know what reprocessed steelies look like.
And I have a MS-66 so I have a good idea of what original coins look like.
Be interesting to see if the amateur me can see anything that would raise red flags.

I'm waiting for the weather to get a bit more stable and better.
Then I'll sit out back and clean up some coins.
Acetone to get rid of crud on some. Should not harm them IF I don't do any rubbing.
Electrolysis on some real disasters. Coins that I would have a hard time making worse AND that don't have enough merit to send to NCS.

Maybe since the steelies are zinc plated is why the Tarn-X didn't attack the steel?

Are you sure it was Tan-X and not a jewlery cleaner? If so at Walmart they sell several different types and some say not for Copper, use on Silver only, etc. Also, if she has been using that for some time it may have left a coating on the coin. Keep on experimenting and let us know. You may well be on the way of a major breakthough in 1943 Steel cent restorations.
