I've been waiting to buy one of these for over a year. I was expecting to purchase an XF common date at some point, but since prices for these have dropped, I decided to purchase one that is full AU. This one resides in a problem free ANACS AU-55 holder. Now its definitely not the best AU-55 out there, but the look and toning pattern of this one grew on me as I contemplated purchasing. I felt connected to it. My type set mostly consists of toned coins, and I have several crusty toned gold coins that bring me great joy. This one should fit in just fine with the burnt orange characteristics.:goofer: It doesnt look to have a ton of luster, but enough to generate a nice cartwheel. The strike seems above average in comparison to the dozens of AU 1854 $3 gold coins I've looked at on Heritage. This is the second to last coin I need to complete my version of the "gold" type set. I just need the type 2 dollar.
That's a lovely coin. Lovely crisp detail, especially the hair and crown. Gold always stays looking beautiful no matter how old it is.
Johnny, Congrats on finally ending your long quest for a nice $3. I know it was a difficult journey for you. I hope you enjoy your Princess. :thumb:
thanks! Yeah, it was a learning experience for sure. "edit, for those that don't know, I unknowingly purchased a raw counterfeit $3 gold a year and a half ago". However, it was that purchase that led me to these forums and the wealth of knowlege and resources regarding this hobby. It was worth it in the end. No regrets. I purchase most of my coins online. Common date AU $3 gold certified by the top 3(this is a must) are generally in the $1,200-$1,500 range these days. There are some decent ones on ebay, but they are mostly overpriced "Buy it Nows". There seem to be much better prices, and better pictures on heritage in my opinion.
That is one of the many coins that have eluded me all these years. Maybe one day I'll be able to get one like that 1854
Here are some updated pics with the coin in hand. It has the most alluring peach/orange color.:goofer:
Nice coin. I have an 1874 in the same grade in an NGC slab. I bought before gold started to sky. Just lucky. Nothing I saw coming. Mine cost $975. As the OP said, you won't get them for that now.
