Since i'm just one coin(49s) short of finishing my Franklin half BU set i decided to start building the 1941-1947 Walking Liberty half short set.
I now have 5 of the twenty coins in that set and they are stunningly beautiful pieces that can still be acquired for 20-70$ apiece in BU.
Here are two of my recent additions.

Those are beautiful coins, and wonderful additions o your collection. I am looking to collect Walking Liberty Halves also, and today I saw a 1921-S that was graded fine. The problem was that the rim may not have been full. The other issue is...what exactly do they mean by full rim? Does it mean the letters are not merging to the rim?

The obverse appeared to be fine. Overall it was a pretty nice coin.

I found this1920s at the flea market for $4.00,judging from photograde i'd call it AG-4.(rim worn down to a few letters)
    Any opinions

    I might say AG3 - you're certainly close enough though ;)

Just today I was trying to decide if I would start a Walking Liberty collection. After looking at these beautiful coins, it helped me make up my mind.

Monday, I'll head for my safety deposit box and see how many I have. Will also buy a Dansco folder. Then, away we go, and hopefully I'll get it completed one of these days.

    :) :)

    Hey Gary.....
I haven't ever tried to do a set of WL halves for my self but am doing one (the short set...1936-1947) for a friend and I would suggest that if you don't have one you buy a 1938-D soon...about last year they started going up and are at a stand still right now...my friend got a 1938-D that was cleaned but at a great price.
Let us know when you complete it!!

    My short set

I too am trying to build a walker short set war years '41-'45- 15 coins. I have the first 5 all "p". I am too picky. It took me almost a year to get these. Also trying to be as picky as possible and stay in a budget is tough. here are some of my pics

Believe it or not, I do collect US coins.

My only serious effort (since 1955 or so) is on a full set of circulated Walking Liberties. I came down to my last three at the recent Long Beach show, when I picked up a nice 1916S. :)

The last three (1919, 1919D, 1921D) may cost me as much as the first 60 or so combined, especially since 40-45 came from circulation back when silver (and 50¢ pieces) circulated. :p

I mostly collect Morgans in MS64 and higher, but I am to the point with
them, that every new one is pricier and pricier. There is a local flea market
dealer that allows me to feed my collecting habit on the cheap in between
those higher priced Morgans and VAMS. Occaisionally he will have a "junk"
box of Walkers. I pick only the ones VF and better in the 40s and F or better
in the 30s. I am missing only the 41-D, 45-D, and 46-D for the short set.
It is almost like collecting out of change back in the old days, because you
never know what you will find. He only wants $2.75 each, and doesn`t
care what you may find. I have found a dozen or so, like the one below.
    You can`t beat the fun.

After checking what I have, I find I have the 1938D.

I'm not good at grading, in fact I really don't understand what I'm doing, although I tried to follow the guidlines. I tink what I have is an F-12.

I realize that one should collect what he/she wants, however, what do you think? Is this a high enough quality coin, or should I try to trade up?

    :) :)

I'd go for XF to AU if it's affordable.

Hey Gary...sorry I didn't post before...I was sick last night and am still partly today....

Well if your going to do a set of mixed grades I would say the one you have is great...I got mine about 2 years ago (right before they started to go up ) for $15 and I was sure it graded VG maybe F12....I sent it to ANACS this year and it came back F15...now I don't agree with the grade on the holder but if when I go to sell if the other guy does I'm not going to say much!!

as Silver Surfer said...XF and AU...I think that most of the time key coins and better dates seem to go up more in the grades F and above.

    Hope this helps

No pics of the '42 so can't say. The '45 is a bit weak on the reverse so I'd say 62. The others - I agree with your 63/64.
