Eureka!! I've Found it, Dear Watson!! I bet you thought I found that Gem $20 Large Brown Seal huh???..LOL This text is the first major composite listing of designers and engravers of bank notes and postage stamps; there are over 500 illustrations. Some of the most beautiful bank notes were designed or engraved by major American artists such as F.O.C. Darley, Asher B. Durand and others, but their work is rarely mentioned among art studies and vignette engravers. Dust jacket creased horizontally on front, with the pencil signature of Gavin Bridson. This will be some pretty heavy reading!! Mr. Bridson is deceased and this book comes from his collection. Hope to pass along some interesting facts! RickieB
Doesn't seem too terribly difficult to find copies... http://product.half.ebay.com/The-Engravers-Line_W0QQprZ890806QQtgZinfoQ2drefresh ...a little on the expensive side for me though as even the cheapest copy is slightly more than I've ever paid for a single note.
No it is not too hard to find.... but a signed copy by a Famous Collector and bibliographer is pretty cool!! RickieB
True...I'm not familiar with that name though...guess it's Google Time! Looking forward to hearing about the interesting things you find in the book!
Rickie, Congrats on finding and getting such a Book! I wish I could share your enthusiasm for both the Book and that it is signed by Mr. Bridson! However, until today, I never knew who or what they were or that they even existed. That tells you how much I know about Bank Notes! Sorry! Frank
There is a companion volume, The International Engravers Line, also by Gene Hessler. It covers engravers worldwide and included a set of notes autographed by the engravers.
Frank...thats all right... Gene Hessler wrote the book and Mr. Bridson was a famous bibliographer in the field of Birds, printing, botany and a few other fields. His Father was a famous man in Europe as well. I never knew of him either until today! My target is to send this to Mr. Hessler and have hiom sign it as well...LOL I only bought it due to the fact that I know few names of Bank Note engravers and the history behnd it. I know the notes, but not the creators!! Thanks Frank.... RickieB
its silly to find all these books for so much money buy the book, or buy more shiney things... touhg choice i really think they need to seel the books a bit cheaper... maybe we canuse clembos time machine togo back in time to get these books too lol
Guy's... this book was pretty expensive for a book... I am splurging on it..I would rather put the $$$ toward a note..but as you know I am interested in the Large Red and Brown Seal Notes of the 1880's thru 1886. There are some micro SN's for the Seals them selves and this is but one of the things I wish to learn more about. If this book is good, I may consider loaning it out to those of you I know..we'll see. It's 538 pages so might take me a while to digest... Bought it as a reference book to study the engravers bio's. RickieB
there are several books on my 'want' list that are well over $100. 1 of the books streets at around $250 or so, i cant remember exactly. But as much as i want them its like most of the notes i want... gotta wait, or learn to live without it
Congrats Rickie. Great to see you so happy with your newly purchased book. Gotta say I was expecting a gem eye candy note when I clicked the link to this thread. On a side note, I'm really feeling pity for all of those who are even thinking of participating in future paper money contests .
Hey Kidromeo.... LOL..that is great!! I like your thinking...:thumb: :thumb: :thumb: Do you want to see the "new" eye candy now or later?? RickieB
You are correct!! Good follow up Letlow... I was hoping some of the guys would have looked it up and seen that as well. I actually bought 2 copies of this book...on is being signed by Mr. Hessler for my son AJ....I will use this one since it is used for my research. Regards, RickieB
Sounds like a very interesting book and a signed copy to boot. The only engravers that I can remember are George Smille, Charles Schlecht and chief engraver Thomas F. Morris. The gentleman worked on the 1896 Educational Series notes. Just read and article about the Educational notes this week and it mentioned their name. Learning is part of the fun in this hobby. By the way I like your new avatar RickieB. :smile Lou
Thank you Lou, I am in the process of getting a little more serious about what I am doing. The vignett is from the $2 Hancock note I bought a short while ago....currently, it is the Top Rated Note in my collection, both in Rarity and Price. Since you were a generous donor to the Tyler LeMaster Fund, please let me know if you would like to borrow it, I will be happy to loan it to you. Should be here within the week if not already! Just got home today.. Reagrds, RickieB (for now, new name pending)
I returned from Tampa yesterday. Just a one night stay at the Hard Rock Casino. Thank you for your generous offer RickieB. :smile Lou
