I'm not sure what draws me to these particular 50c pieces, but for some reason I like them. I've been looking for both years with a nice globe detail on the reverse, and I think I found the first. What do you think?
Nice Columbian expo, you have great taste in a coin commemorating a significant Chicago event. Early commems are wonderful to collect - so much history (good, bad, and bogus), some beautiful designs, some significant events and some not-so-significant events. They are interesting to collect, although they can get pricey. Onthe other hand, Modern commems for the most part are cash cows for the US Mint.
Nice coin. I also like these and heres a pic of one of my best 1892 ones. I know its a bad picture I just can not get a good pic unless I have natural sun light but it shows the detail of the globes pretty well.
I agree, that has got be a 67+, maybe a 69? And it's a 1892! Most of them I see, the globe is almost completely worn and that one looks perfect. For reference mine is a 63.
I LOVE the old commemoratives. I have 3 Columbians and will be selling one of them (to help me afford others). I love the Stone Mountain (have it) and the Pilgrim (don't have it yet) and many of the others. I only have about 8 different ones, but it is a good start! I just wish they weren't so pricey....
Awesome coin! I think you're now somehow obligated to read The Devil in the White City because of this.
The population for an 1892 Columbian in MS67 is 48/0. I am not saying that his coin is not an MS67, just that it is very unlikely despite the apparent great strike. The last MS67 1892 Columbian sold by Heritage went for $15K. http://coins.ha.com/common/view_item.php?Sale_No=1121&Lot_No=6103#photo
If those coins are any indication of an MS67, I'll stick with my MS67+ grade. Assuming the rest of the reverse and the entire obverse are equal in detail to the detail shown in the pic, I'd say thats a one of a kind coin! We now need more pics fastfun :smile
While I'm no expert, I don't see anything when comparing it to the Heritage pics that keep it from being a 67. I know what your saying Lehigh, according to the PCGS pop report there 18x more 66s, and nothing higher than 67, so the odds aren't there. But even at a 66 it's worth about $1300. Thanks for sharing fast.
What is the best company to go with for garding the Columbian halves. I want to submit the coin to a reputable grader. Thanks for any advice.
PCGS or NGC are your best bets, here's a little info: 1) PCGS has graded a total of 5,634 1892s, of those only 9 have been MS67 with none finer. That is about 0.15% of all coins being MS67. 2) NGC has graded a total of 4,940 1892s, of those only 39 have been MS67 with none finer. However, I saw one MS68 on Heritage that sold back in 2002, not sure why it's not showing on the pop report. Exluding the MS68, that is about 0.79% of all coins being MS67. So it appears you have better odds of getting a MS67 grade out of NGC, but from what I saw the PCGS coins are selling for much more money.
