1999-2008 Silver Proof Set.

I was looking for an ASE 1986-2009 mint state set in a Dansco or Littleman album or something similar and came across this 1999-2007 silver proof set containing 95 coins and the red box to hold them. The unusual thing was the only silver proof set I had was the 2008 silver set which I bought from the mint for $45 and would complete this set. I bid $525.00 and won it for $510.00 I looked through my red book and came up with a ridiculous price and past auctions on ebay and I really couldn't go by there prices since they were all over the board. Was this a good purchase,I really appreciate your help.Randy.Beck

Very good buy I would say. From the photos, the boxes looks like they are in very good shape also, which I think is important. Take your time when you open them. I have this set also but some of the boxes were opened hastly and it still bugs me the boxes are not in the shape they should be.

 

Outstanding buy, you did extremely well. I watch these from time to time, always that '99 that holds me back.

 

You did beyond good on that deal! A realistic retail price should have been around $680 to get that set from a dealer. Very nice!

Yeah, I am almost crying to hear you say that, cause I bought 1999 all silver(complete set, pennies and all) for $715........

 

That's a great buy, I'm glad I bought that set when it was offered by the Mint. The original price of all ten sets from the mint came to nearly $450.

i hope it is the silver proof sets not clad.the box'es are easy to open and close back.i have been watching them for a long time on ebay.seen a lot of 1999 silver proof box'es sold.if someone wanted to they could put the clad coins in the box and sell it as the silver set.if you open it to make sure that it is silver when you get them. then they will say how do we know that you did not change them when you opened the box.they were only around 800.000 silver proof sets total to start with.alot were opened for grading a lot of them were opened and sold for albums.a lot were just stored up by the buyer.and still they are always some on ebay for sale.makes you wonder a little.

Valid point and exactly what I'd do if I had bought this lot. Since this thread originally was started 4-20-2009, and we haven't heard back from the OP, I think it's safe to assume that all was well with the sets....:smile

You did very well on your recent purchase! If I had the money, I'd be in the market for something like that. But a word of advice (and I'm sure you're aware of it), never use the Redbook as a price guide when buying anything. When the market gets soft on a certain series, it seems to take years for them to adjust.

 

Why would the redbooks be no good as references for buying things? I thought that was what they were used for? I realize that prices change during a year but why not as a loose reference? Just curious.

Make me wonder why I did not purchase them from the Mint when they were initailly issued. It would have been one of th few Mint products that actually increased in value.

 

The coin market fluctuates pretty rapidly. By the time the Red Book's are printed and hit the shelves the prices are already a couple months old. They simply aren't up to date. I think they are good for a VERY general price idea...but not much more than that.

 

That's what I thought. Thank you. With that being said where does one go to get the most accurate and up to date pricing?

 

There are a couple of options. I think the best one is just to use the Heritage Auctions website. That's how I do it. It's free to sign up and just browse the old auctions to see what things are selling for.
