Possible Error Cent?

Hello, I think I found this coin a few years ago in change; I'm no expert in error coins, but it seems like an almost entirely grease-filled die to me. I'm afraid the picture doesn't quite do it justice. Since the pictures are kind of blurry, I put in a normal cent for comparison.

The obverse of the coin is almost perfectly flat; for the most part, only the outlines of the major details of Lincoln are visible. "Liberty" is readable, as is the "In" in "In God We Trust" I can't really make out any of the other words. I can barely make out "199?" as the date, my guess is 1998. The rim is also present on the coin.

Can anyone tell me more about what this could be?

Is the coin the same weight and thickness as the normal cent? It looks possibly like it was struck thru a late stage die cap.

I don't have a way to accurately weigh the coin right now, but it seems to be of normal thickness.
