i can argue we always had technology but that will be a separate thread nice post i certainly understand where you are coming from
Nice post. Hunger is the best sauce. Old internet request: “hello, is anybody out there?” 1970’s Northstar computer with a 4 mhz cpu, 16k rom, Monochrome video. I would have loved to have one of these powerhouses at the time. temp avatar
Frogger's where it's at. I remember spending countless hours playing that game....classic. Great post, I agree with basically everything you said. I didn't get serious about collecting until I found Coin Talk and other coin sites, and I'm glad I did....but in case anyone hasn't noticed, I've been taking a break for a couple of months...I started spending WAY too much money on things that I thought I needed to be a serious collector, and I realized a little too late that I don't need anything...I think I lost site of my original goal, which was just to hold pieces of history that I thought were cool. Now I have some awesome pieces, but not all of them mean a lot to me, and won't be easy to sell (if I decide to sell them). I just need some time to rethink how to go about collecting. Great post. -Peter
I am a YN and I have felt this competition with myself like jaceravone mentioned. I am not really competing with others, but I am often influenced by others' coins that I like. For example, before I joined CoinTalk, I had no desire to buy toned coins, but now after seeing posts by members like lehigh and tonedcointrader, I look for nice toning instead of blast white (except on coppers, which I still prefer red). I really can't complain because I have learned a lot from CT and have made many good purchases due to my knowledge that I gained here.
thats right i hope all of u get converted so i can buy my white coins for cheap and in peace
Joe.... Nice post my friend! Back in December when his family had all the trouble with a fire in their home, injury to a sibling and multitudes of other struggles trying to keep it all together, you were one of the generous doners to a Fund I established called the "Tyler LeMaster Fund". About 15 members here donated aprox $420.00 of the $560 that we as a group sent to his family to aid in the repair of a hole in the house due to the fire! It was a cold Winter here in the North East and having that hole must have really sucked! Having talked to Tyler and his Family, they were humbled at the generous offering our group had made to assist them in a time of need. My plea to everyone here for support to help this family was only acted upon by a tiny fraction of the population here that knew Tyler. As many of you know me (somewhat) many others do not and I can see where my request to collect funding to assist fell upon some deaf ears! I am sad to see Tyler give up something he loved so much! I cant tell you how many coins I had sent him in the past but it was what he collected at that time. To see him depart due to not being able to participate in something he loves and shares with us is hard to fathom! Like many of you here, I grew up with very little and have always made my own way since the tender age of 8 when I lost my Dad. My heart went out to Tyler and still does....he must do what he has to do to really define who he is and his direction and study of the Cloth will certainly support him from a guidance standpoint! Life is not easy, we all have had ups and downs...a Man will emerge from a boy and struggles we take head on will become but slight innconvienence. For those of you who had supported Tyler through the Fund, I sincerely thank you again...and you know who you are! My wish for Tyler is to now find his direction and travel the many roads that will form and nurture the emerging Man inside of him! One day he will return better prepared, smarter, and have the ability to participate from a financial standpoint as well. I look forward to seeing that day and to welcome him back. God Bless Tyler, be safe and I will always be a friend. Call me if I can ever help you!! Rick Bradley
Good post Rick. You bring up a point from the OP that a lot of us forgot about. I hate to see anyone leave the hobby but there's no rule that says you have to stay. I can't blame him. Likes, dislikes, and priorities can change so much as you get older. Especially when you're young. Man, at his age, I lost interest in coins completely. All I cared about was girls and buying accessories for a truck that I would later trade in on a new one anyway. Then all I wanted to buy was guns and accessories. Then I got in to reef aquariums. Still am. Got back into baseball cards really strong around 2002-2003. Really got interested in the grading aspect. Pretty much all I focused on those summers. Then totally lost interest. Now I'm back into coins and am feeling kind of burned out on reef related stuff. All I want to buy is coins now. Maybe some day, I'll need to take a break from coins. I mean, it's just the way it goes and it's not necessarily a problem or something that somebody did. The hobby will always be there when you want to come back. If I could go back though, I wish I would have stuck with coins. That's my opinion. But sometimes wants and desires can change and $$ is a limiting factor for everyone. Sometimes you just can't do everything you want to do. Luckily for now, we live in a free country and he's got a lifetime of earning potential to decide what he wants to do with and what makes him happy. You can't ask for much more than that.
You don't have to collect to participate in the forum. People around here need to collect in their own style that they can afford and enjoy. I like some of my ag's as much as the MS coins. This is a hobby to relax and enjoy. And LOL the good ol' days was being the younger brother and getting the hand me downs. At least by high school we were very different sizes and I got my own clothes. What is really funny is that in the late 60's early 70's when my parents had it rough we lived on hamburger helper - you want to watch my brother get sick(he's 49) just have the smell of hamburger helper in the house. You can watch him gag. And Toad - I remember Pong on Atari. I got an Atari that had like 3 games on it - something pong, tennis and I can not remember what else. I used to play pong for hours on a old 12" b&w tv.
those were the days, our first tv was a 12" b/w. Loved pong hockey, i always tried to use "english" but it didnt work.
Mark, I feel your brothers pain.......smells have an unique way of bringing back very vivid memories.
