    All,
Does this coin have an more value to it because it is a specific VAM? I am just starting to figure out these Morgans. This one is a little rough. It has some obvious wear and some bad rim dings. If I was trying to grade it myself I think I would give it a F-15 at best. But let me know what you think and if it is that variety I speak of.
    Cheers,

Its just a normal die 1879 CC, VAM 1(as in nothing special). As to a grade probably F. Not good on grading circ Morgans.

    Byrd,
It does appear to be normal at first and it is hard to get the picture of the CC, but I think I see a little doubling on the CC. Since the coin is worn so well there is also some doubling on the top of the 1 in 1879. It is harder to see the doubling on the 8. Does this still make it a "normal" CC? Thanks

After looking at the pics again, it still looks like nothing. Sorry. Maybe some more Vammers will post their opinions. Its probably just post-mint damage.

Right now I'm having trouble getting on VamWorld :computer:. The CC does look strange though, I'll let you know what I think once I can get on.

    Date Pic

I added a pic of the date, it is hard to get that close to a coin to get an accurate pic. I was trying to show the doubling of the date.
    Cheers,

That honestly looks just like normal die wear. It looks nothing like genuine doubling.

VAM stands for Leroy Van Allen and George Mallis hence VAM, they identified and categorized many of the different Morgan and Peace varieties, VAMworld can definitely explain it much better than me :thumb:.
Am I still the only one who can't get on the site, it won't load for me.

    Wow, thank you. :high5:

The term VAM is an acronym for "Van Allen - Mallis."

I see why explaining this question is a bit difficult.

Lots to learn, may explain some differences with the Morgans I have.

    Area around lips on some.

    Thanks again.

    Raider34,

Ok I finally got on VamWorld I would agree it looks like the VAM 3, nice find :thumb:, it's in the top 100. Because it's circulated it's probably hard to see the doubling in the 18 and the 9, but the open 9 matches and so does the filled G in God.

IWBD! I must have skipped over VAM 3 when looking through them. Sorry about the other posts. That sure is the VAM 3. Great Find. Good eyes!

:bigeyes:I just realized you have VAM 3 in the title. That shows I don't even read the title.:p I just read the post not the title. If I read that first that would have just about solved everything.

So since we have identified that it is a VAM-3 Give me an idea of the grade of the coin and the possible value. Does the coin increase in value because it is on the top 100 VAM list or is that just a list. Thanks guys.

I would be worried about the big rim ding, and it looks like it may have been cleaned. I would say it has VG details. The capped CC Vam is interesting, because according to Numismedia it's actually worth slightly less then a regular 79' CC, until you reach like MS65, and then it's worth more. It's still a very nice find :thumb:.

    Thanks Raider,

You seem to be on all my recent threads. I was wondering about that price thing too. I didn't know if the redbook was reffering to that specifec VAM or not. I am learning things every day. Thanks again.
