Well my first inclination is to grade it a proof 65/66. However, the obverse may have been buffed. I'd really have to take a closer look.
Yes thats why I suggested a proof grade. But again, there is something about the obverse, that is just a tad bit more curious to me, and only a closer inspection will do. But, I would take a leap and go for it. Care to share how you acquired the coin ? Thanks Tom.
First of all proof is not a grade, it is a method of manufacture. This coin is a business strike, which means the dies and planchet were not polished to a mirror like finish and the coin was struck only once. Second, I bought it at a coin shop for $30 so I think I got a deal.
If that's a proof, then I'm a buffalo. Nice coin, but not worth sending in, IMO. They have to be practically perfect for this year to be worth grading, IMO. Look at the pops and values for this year. Keep it raw and enjoy it! That's a nice coin for $30.
Well If I assume grading fees are $25 and insurance and shipping back and forth another $20 and you paid $30, thats $75. You might come close to breaking even at 65 (about $65-70), will break even or come out a few bucks ahead at 66 (about $80-90) and will be on top of the world at 67 (over $300). (at 68, you're master of the universe: $11,500) If you think you can get a 67 go ahead, otherwise I'd keep it at home.
Just sent some to NCG yesterday. If you sent it insured, it would cost at least the first class mail + min. insurance is 1.70, so there is $ 2.13. NCG returns registered mail,FedEx , or USPS expressmail. Registered mail is cheapest and for 1 coin NCG charges $5.35 for registered mail and insurance begins at 10.80 for up to $100, for total shipping of $16.05. So you are in for $18.18 shipping on one coin under $100. Economy service is $16, so the total would probably be minimum of $34.18 as I see it. Now if you are sending multiples, the cost per coin decreases shipping/hndlg. Jim
Nice I agree...MS 65/66....From what i SEE IN pHOTO.....(would need to see more in detail)If you free confident to ship ...go for it...or wait till you have a few and then send the lot in for grading...very nice coin...me personally would leave it raw and in a nice holder...Good luck
I think the soft strike on the obverse keeps the grade to 65 max. This date is known to have strong strikes. Not worth grading as stated in this thread. Compare it to the superb gem attached. The knot and hair above it on yours lacks the detail.
Coinman, these are pics of one of my coins for comparison not the OP's. Thanks I'll take it as a compliment.
