I collect coins that I have all intentions they will go to my sons. But, I collect what I like and they hopefully will like what I collected for them. I do this thinking they will improve on the sets they were given or expand the collection into a generational family collection. All the time I realize they very well may sell the collection. That is okay too since I'll be gone and it won't matter to me. The only rule is if my wife is around when I'm not, is to not turn the collection over to them until they are old enough (mature enough) to realize what they have and make a good decision. After the state quarters were started we moved on to the American Silver Eagles which I am happy with the decision.

I am attempting to have for them some type of every circulating coin by denomination ( cent, nickel, dime, etc.). I also want to cover three centuries of American Coinage (19th, 20th, and 21st) with every decade of the 3 centuries represented even if it includes some type of small type set(s). At the same time I also will probably collect commemerative silver dollars that I like. I'm only four decades short now, but will close that gap in time.

The point is it is my collection right now so I collect what I like and want that I can afford. I think if they will be interested in coins they will like and appreciate what I have assembled for them. Someone asked me at work recently how many coins have I collected. I never thought of it as individual coins, only sets. I thought about it for a few minutes trying to count it up in my head, and to my surprise it is several hundred coins, and didn't have to spend a fortune to do it.

I second the MS63 Franklin set. I'm putting one together myself, in an Intercept Shield album. I've got 15 to go. It hasn't been my main focus because I've been going after other things. But there's a lot of reasons to like the Franklin set.

For one, almost all of them are still relatively inexpensive in high grades. They're easy to find. Some a little tougher. They're one of the easiest coins to grade IMO. Big open fields. Franklin either has wear on his head or not. The bell lines look sharp or they're not. And then I just look for full mint luster and try to find one with the fewest bag marks, if any at all. That's where it gets tough. Most of them have a bag mark/ding in them somewhere. Finding one that doesn't is the challenge.

Prices on these could go up simply based on their bullion value in the future, in comparison to what you pay for them now. They have a relatively low premium over their spot value. Even in high grades.

Don't get your hopes up of her following through with the hobby 'non-stop'. I really got into it as a kid (despite having very little guidance because nobody in the family collected). But when I got into my mid teens, I forgot all about it. Never gave coins a second thought for 14 years!
The passion just came back to me last year. So if she loses interest, don't get discouraged. It may come back if you light a spark one more time.
Although it may be a good idea to not give her control of the more important stuff until later in life. Or it'll be sold for peanuts in the teen years and you'll never know. Just my opinion.

My young step sister couldn't even discipline herself enough to leave a state quarters set intact without spending them. She certainly didn't need to.

Perhaps a large amount of mixed foreign currency. Something she would be able to get her hands dirty with, pick out her favorites. I believe this would be the most rewarding for your youngster.

Thanks for all your suggestions I have alot to think about now.
I do plan on giving the coins to her at an older age.
