I want to start a coin collection for my 2 year old daughter. Besides the usual wheat penny album which I am doing, what types of reasonable priced coins do you recommend I purchase for her as possible good investments? My mother has ben doing the quarter and presidential dollar thing for her. ray
Silver Roosevelt Dimes 1946-1964 in GEM BU and Franklin Halves 1948 to 1963 in BU. You can still get them cheap in BU. Most of the Franklins if not full bell will cost under $30. The Rosies are mostly 3 to 5 dollar coins in BU.
Reasonable? How about a Canadian Large cent collection? There are a few good varieties in the set that you could keep your eyes peeled and with the exception of 2 or 3 coins, they are all relatively low cost. You can find many bulk lots on ebay to get you started.
I don't know. I have a few kids but getting them interested in coins before 6 seems to me to be rushing things. Ruben
One of my business partners has a seven y/o daughter. When she found out that I collected coins, she asked me the same thing that you just asked. I got her started on American Silver Eagles. She put together a UNC set very quickly and then started on the proof set. I don't think she has kept up with it since 2006, but its still a nice set nonetheless. Personal issues have prevented her from continuing the set, but as soon as things settle down, she has shown interest in continuing the set for her daughter. Most uncs can be had for about $20, except the 96 and then the 2006W, 2007W and 2008W. The guy I help out at coin shows sells them for $20 each. $20x20years = $200 +/- the other coins. Not bad for a complete set. Good luck.
A very quick and easy set that for her may be really worth something say in 67 years is a BU set of the Bicentennial Coins, i think that would be awesome to have coins from the 200th anniversary during the 300th anniversary which sadly i will probably miss but i never know, this set you can do and still have a budget for bigger ones
I would keep a collection myself to give her at a later age for investment, but would encourage her now or anytime to have the collecting spirit. "Princess ( your W/L)" coins, along with "Mother" coins ( Morgans, etc.), Disney money ( I guess they still have it ~My son has his collection from his early age), and coins with animals...eagles, rabbits, dolphins, pandas.... The knowledge and experience of collecting what they like at this age will translate into great returns when they receive your treasure chest later in life. Jim
A complete set of Franklins. In MS63 only one coin is above $80 the 1949-S all the rest can be had for under that, in fact 17 of those coins can be had for less than $20 each in that grade. Not a bad set to put together.
I recommend a set of business strike bullion American Silver Eagles....all 3 of my granddaughters have a full set each and we are working on the proofs....
Well for $100 per coin you might well be tempted to look at world coinage and if you are looking for something to appeal to a young child then have a look at silver Pandas, Kangaroos etc
The Isle of Man cat crowns would be cool for a little girl. And the Pobjoy Mint version of those are very pretty. see also: http://www.pobjoy.com/ukworld/section.php/426/0 http://www.silvercoinstoday.com/silver-coin-celebrates-50th-anniversary-of-barbie%E2%84%A2/10815/
If you are looking for canadian coins then look for Whitman small cents folder and these are ideal for kids
Maybe a type set or even a proof type set. Start with moderns and work back. At an older age she can look at the set and decide on a direction that is cool to her. I have found young folks have a hard time staying focused on one type because of the many choices. I'll bet she picks something with a pretty lady on the obverse.
