At the club's auction Thursday night, an old time dealer member entered a set of 2 1941S lincolns. They were labeled Large date and small date. I knew there was no such animal, so I figured it was a Large S, small S set. I bid a dollar and no one raised it, so here is a new member of my Lincoln collection of varieties.

The small "s" is Breen 2156, the Large "S" is much less common, Breen 2157, same mintmark that continued on in 1942-44.

Very cool. Do you know how many large S coins were minted?

    No, just that I don't see many of them. Also in 1928 (S,s), 1940 (S,s ( including a S/s )). 1940 also had 2 different "4", crosslet and normal. According to Breen.

    I thought

I thought that the difference was that the mintmark was upside down on one. Or is that another coin?:loud:

The 1941S large S is actually rather common. of every 50 coin roll you find, 15-20 of them will be the large S. They are more common than the 1928 large S.

To my knowledge there was only one style of S mintmark used in 1940. It would be the same as the small S for 1941.

The scarcer possibilities lie in the mid-1940s to the late 1940s. 1944S is known with two different mintmark styles, and 1945 is known with 2 as well. 1946 has three, and 1947 has two. Reports have it that 1948 has two different styles although I have only confirmed the existence of one.

1952D has at least two different mintmark styles.

The inverted mintmark (only one known so far in Lincoln cents) is 1946S.

Chuck, you certainly have better rolls than I do! I have only found 3 ( lesser condition than this one) in 5 rolls of circulated. The rest of the info is good to have, and I thank you.

    Breen has a 2151~ 1940S ( large S) and 2150 ~ 1940S ( small S ), both with Crosslet "4" besides the 2152 ~ 1940S ( Large S over small S, crosslet "4".

    Whereas the normal is 2149 ~ 1940S ( small s, plain 4)

i have nightmares about these vast amounts of lincoln cent varieties. this isn't making recovery any easier

advice for fellow beginner collectors; stay away from the small cents until you've been around the block a few times. i tried to restrain myself but i just like these pennies too much.

very cool find here, great coins

I will have to pull some 1941S rolls out of the bags and go through them just to make sure my averages are right...but I have never had trouble locating a number of them when I wanted to.

Chuck, you don't really have to do that. I wasn't disputing your estimates at all. I just have never had much luck finding things in rolls . My big problem, and I recognize it, but don't really know how to fix it, is that I begin to fixate on one area. I may be looking at a mint mark and then 10 coins later realize, I only looked at the mint marks and not at the lettering. Or the reverse. I just haven't learned how to look at all features equally.

I agree, it has been suggesting that 5 to 10 % are of the large variety which come out between 4,618,000 to 9,236,000
