Check this out 1877 pr-1. How can you possibly tell from the way this coin looks that it is a proof? You can't see the bold-n or anything. Maybe it looks different in hand. Just thought I would post this since it is the lowest grade proof I have ever seen.
If I was an NGC Grader, I would rather Bodybag the coin than to have the reputation of grading any Proof Coin as a PR-1! Frank
There are collectors who intentionally collect the most worn coins they can find. They limit themselves to PR-1 and FR-2.
yea, that is for poor, not proof. I like how the ad says it is a "beautifull collectors coin" Beauty is in the eye I guess. at $475 that is way high to me for what I consider to be a coin that isn't in collectible condition, it isn't that much more for a solid G.
Yes and there are folks that collect cow dung and donkey do but neither are worth the Jack's squat! Frank
I'm going to take you to task for your post. For someone who labels himself "Supporter" I consider your post to lack both feeling and understanding. People collect what interests them. And what they can afford.
It very may well have been manufactured as a proof but has been treated very poorly over the years - thus the grade. i'm suspect of the holder though.
Task away Task Master! I was being sarcastic as I often am! When do you not see me supporting the members of and visitors to Coin Talk that collect coins? I just can't see any other reason for a TPG to grade such a coin...except to make money. If I was an NGC Grader and there was any way possible for me to return the coin to the Submitter with a note...stating "don't waste your' money", I would! Frank
the TPG graded the coin because thats what they are paid to do. It is not their job to try to figure out why a person would like it graded just determine whether it is slabable or not. from what i can tell this coin is solidly at the grade given. Tpg's are in the business to make money, not to decide you are wasting yours. Richard
First off, it's a POOR-1 not a PROOF-1. NGC uses PF to signify proof coins and PR to signify poor ones (PCGS uses PR for proof and PO for poor, IIRC). That said, it is easy to distinguish proofs and non-proofs of this year, even in very low grades. All 1877 business struck IHCs have a shallow "N" in ONE and the proofs don't....Mike
Look at that - learned something new today from the groups. Not about the N's, but NGC abreviates poor as PR. I guess I look at too many PCGS coins.
