Are Special Comm Mint Sets Worth Buying?

Up until last summer, I had to have every single item the mint ever made. If there was a special collectors set, I had to have it. Then I finally got sick of all that stuff piling up. Most of it was worthless and I sold all of it except a few items that I either liked or were more valuable than the rest.

Now this year we have at least two interesting special comm mint sets coming out. First the Lincoln, 5 coin set is going to released this summer. Now this sounds incredible and I will most likely buy it. But how about the Braile comm set. Worth buying? Probably not. Hard to really judge these on whats going to be big and what isn't.

My favorites were always the coin and currency sets. They always seem to be the most popular and in highest demand. I bought mine years ago from the mint. Who knew that they were going to be highly sought after. It is the only place to find the special minted matte nickels of 1994 and 1997. Next were the coin and medal sets, but I got rid of all mine.

Special mint sets can sometimes be rewarding.....even years after the fact. Back in 1998 when they released the two coin RFK/JFK set, I never knew there was anything special about the set. I just bought it because I liked it. It wasn't until about 4 years ago that I found out that was the only set where you could find the special matte half dollar. How come I don't remember much excitement about these sets when they were released? Did the mint make a big deal about them? Did collectors know the importance of the sets? Sort of like the 1995W ASE. I remember the mint saying that this dollar was only available with the 4 coin AGE set. At the time I was a senior in college so the set was a little out of my price range, but even if it came out today, would I buy it??? Last year definitely.... but this year, I don't think I would.

Tsk Tsk Spock. UNCs are the way to go! :loud: I just don't know if I am a big fan of the special collector sets anymore. The Lincoln set will be neat if they do it right.

Yes, don't plan on making any money. Many 30 year old proof sets sell for less than purchase value.

Its rare, true... but i do agree with Ruben :) I know most commems wont make me rich. I just like collecting them. I do buy both the proofs and Unc. I also like to buy the sets they release... coin&curency, Coin&stamp, coin&medal ect... i have alot of them. The 5 coin lincoln set due out later this year ... whats going to be in it? 5 cents, 4 cents and a commem dollar? If its just cents, i doubt i will buy it. But if it includes a commem, they i most likely will.

I do get excited when my coins acrue in value - especially when i buy them at issue price - like the 20th anniv of the ASE set. I knew the reverse proof would be popular, and almost killed msyelf scraping up the $100 to buy it lol and im glad i did... now i dont have to pay close to triple the price (give or take a few bucks lol)to get one.

I am a collector. I want my stuff to gain in value, but i am not an investor where i only collect so when it does gain in value, i can sell it for a profit.

Commems are just plain cool... and yes, even the ugly ones :D

I agree with the above posts. I have passed on some of the comm sets. I will only buy the coin or set if it interests me. I did however buy the Braille easy-open capsule UNC because it is unique.

I buy if I like, they in a few yrs. see if the item has gone up in value.

how is it unique? because the coin has the braille, or because of the easy open capsule? :) I did get my order in early for these.. didnt want to have to get themoff the secondary market like i did with the lincolns.
