Has anyone heard if the mint will at some point produce an Iraq or Afghanistan War commem. I know that you can receive a campaign coin while in the service. Maybe there has to be a certain number of years after the war has ended until it can be made?:D

I don't think that any amount of time needs to pass to mint a comm coin. Just get a letter writing campaign going and send letters to all your state's senators and representatives and everyone who may have any influence and get them to submit a bill for the comm coin.

Obviously, there may be other, more formal, things required, but you get the idea. I think it is a great idea.

I don't think they'll do anything like that until at minimum those wars are actually over.

A best case scenario for completion in Iraq is 2011, and for Afghanistan there's no projected end date. If you want to push for a commemorative coin for those campaigns, I'd at least wait until they're definitively over.

I just did a search today on Thomas.gov looking for the next generation of commemorative legislation. There is an Army infantry commem in the works, but nothing specificaly for the Iraq/Afghan war... not yet anyhoots :) just give the legislator folks some time, someone will surely suggest it. I fully support the troops 100% considering both my brother and cousin were sent over... so dont take this the wrong way.. BUT, the war is not all that popular with the public. I would expect it to stay that way untill all the troops are home. I would think that would be the time a commem might be concieved. It might have a better chance of selling ... but then issuing one now might have higher sales based on all the parents wanting one becuase there child is or was there at one point...

While there is no law, there is a general guideline for commemorations that recommends that anniversaries or events be marked on 50 year intervals. These guidelines came about around the same time as they went to a two program per year rule.

Heck, we'll all be dead by the time an Iraqi/Afghan comm comes out because the war isn't going to end for a long, long, long time...... despite what our President says.

here is food for thought... maybe lol

on the mints web site, they have a page for new coin legislation. This includes 'most' new coins signed into public law.

    Commemorative name - Public law
Civil Rights Act of 1964 Commemorative Coin Act 110-451 (for 2014)
United States Army Commemorative Coin Act of 2008 110-450 (for 2011)
Boy Scouts of America Centennial Commemorative Coin Act 110-363 (for 2010)
National Infantry Museum and Soldier Center Commemorative Coin Act 110-357 (for 2012)
American Veterans Disabled for Life Commemorative Coin Act 110-277 (for 2010)

So i assume, that if its been signed into law, then it WILL be minted, correct? If so, then the commems for 2010 are selected, and then 1 each for the next 3 years after that...

kind of cool to see some of the design concepts for these coins....

oops forgot... here is the page to see whats listed. Just click on the title of each commem, and it will bring you to where the legislation is for each commem :)
