No pic but I was going through a roll of dateless Buffalo Nickels yesterday and with a bit of Nic A Date found me an otherwise A.G. Buffalo 1913D Type 1. Yes, I was quite pleased as I only $7.00 for the whole roll. Also found a 1925,(2)1919,(2)1916D,1916,1924,1914,1918,1913 Type 1,1917D,1919S,1920 all in A.G. with the help of the acid. Could anyone give me a rough guess as to the value of the 1913D Type 1? Thanks! Hope everyone had a wonderful Easter!:goofer:
Nice find! Did you Nic-a-Date the type 1? The reason I ask is that will lower the value. With the Type 1 reverse it is clear what date it is already. I'd say it's worth a couple dollars if it has been nic-a-dated, maybe $3 or $4 if not.
Yes, unfortunatly, I had to Nic a date all of them. Could not tell with a 10x loupe what the dates were. The rest of all of these grade AG other than the date problems. Thanks for the reply.
What I meant was that 1913 was the only year with a type 1 reverse. So, what I do when Nic-a-Dating Buffalo's is check the reverse for type 1 first. That way, I won't put it on type 1 coins because I already know they are 1913. In that condition, the loss of value is so minimal it doesn't really matter...but if it was a 1913-S Type 1, it would make a bigger difference for that coin because the value is a bit higher. So, next time I would recommend checking the reverse first.
" I see said the blind man". Yes, I now see what you mean. It was automaticallly a 1913 Type 1 because of the mound. I really did'nt need to acid the coin when I spotted the D. Must have been having a "senior moment". LOL. Thanks.
They still make Nic-a-Date? Wow. I remember buying that stuff 40 years ago from Louisiana Coin Exchange. I used it on some dateless Buffs and found out that I just had common dates. And the dates disappeared after a few days.
I remember that seeing ads for that stuff in Coins or Coinage magazine back in the '60s-- made by the Nic-a-Lene Company. I had no idea they were still making it.
It sounds like you have a lot of fun although the Nick a date was unfortunate for the tyoe one. Not a big loss. The type I's are quite common. Ruben
