Hi! I was given some coins and one of them is a 5 lire 1813 "Napoleone Gioacchino" piece in amazing condition. I am trying to search online for how much the coin is worth but I am having a hard time finding anything. Anyone know off the top of their head? I am paying my own way through college and could really use the money. Thanks! -Anna
Anna, this coin is listed under Naples & Sicily in the Italian States chapter in the 19th Century Krause catalogue. As to a price,I can't tell you off the top of my head. Aidan.
Hi Anna, and to CoinTalk. The coin Aidan referred to is listed as KM#111, a 25g, .900 silver coin with a diameter of ~38mm. With an actual silver weight of .7234 oz. its bullion value is about $8.38. If your college expenses are similar to those my grandchildren are facing, I'm afraid selling the coin won't be that much help. A dealer isn't likely to give you more than about 70% of the retail value, and many dealers who don't traffic in that type of coin would go even lower. On the other hand, unless you have an established presence on EBay, you're not likely to get a true retail value there, at least without getting it graded and authenticated by a top of the line grading company. The value given in the 2001 3rd Ed. 19th Century Standard Catalog of World Coins ranges from $100 for a Fine grade, to $1,200 for an uncirculated example. Only 37,000 were minted in 1813, and I hope a forum member with some expertise in Italian State gold will post an explanation of why the 1812 version, with a mintage of 2,921,000 is valued from $600-$5,250. If you can post clear pictures of both sides, we can give you some guidance on what grade it would be likely to receive, and whether the expense of grading/authenticating would be justified. ("Amazing condition" does not have an established meaning to numismatists. ) Good luck.
thanks Yeah I wasn't expecting to get more than $1,000 from it in the first place. I won't have access to a decent camera until tomorrow night so I will post the pictures on here then. Basically the coin is in similar condition to a 90's quarter. I can still read the writing on the edge, and the coin is very clean. The reason I said "amazing" was that I saw the same coin on ebay going for $500 and it was very dirty, worn and dark colored. Thank you so much for your help! -Anna
That puts it in the VG to F range If it's been harshly cleaned it's worth less than half of what it would be in uncleaned condition. Sad to say, my guiess is that you may have a $50 coin.
haha... its fine. I'm a chemical engineer maybe I can figure out a chemical to make it look dirty and used. (jk!) Thanks for your help.
