Hello, I am a new member and have a 1992-P Kennedy half I would like some input and possible valuation on. I posted it on metaldetectingforum.com and a senior member recommended your site. I just got back from my local coin shop and the owner was perplexed and advised I send it in to ANA for grading...what do you all think? The coin appears to have multiple mintmarks near the "P" mintmark and near the "2" in the date. The additional mintmarks looks like "S" to me. Please advise
It's probably just a die chip or a worn die. I would not send it to a TPG because I think it would be a waste of money. And don't send it to ANA; they don't grade coins. They sold off ANACS years ago.
The mark under the P looks kind of like the G for FG initials on the reverse. I can't figure out why it would not be reversed though.?!/?
Do you feel confident about that statement? I am not an expert, but have had three coin dealers view the coin and the consensus seems to be multiple mint marks. I mean no disrespect and value your opinion (that's why I joined this forum), but would a die chip or worn die produce unsymetrical inclusions? These marks are raised and symetrical and both seem to be "S". I will post some additional pics through my 30X loup this evening. Please review these pics. Thanks!
I thought that at first, but the "FG" is stamped between the eagle's left leg and tail feathers...odd place for it wouldn't you say? Error or not, it is certainly an unusual find. I coin roll and this one jumnped out like the boogieman! LOL!
Numismatic News has an expert in the error field tho I cannot remeber his name right off... David Harper? You might look them up and forward your photos to them. No loss of money this way by TPG's. Just a thought. Intresting find for sure!
They stopped punching mintmarks separately a while before 1992 and also it doesn't even look like a mintmark. Still a very nice coin, but those are just die chips, sorry.
Dave isn't an error guy, he's the publisher of FW Publications (including Numismatic News) - nice guy, I've sat over dinner with him on occasion. Your coin looks like it has some old, worn die damage, probably tooling marks of some sort. It is not "multiple mintmarks" - mintmarks were a part of the design hubbed into the dies in 1992. Repunching mintmarks would already have been a thing of the past. There really isn't anyone to send the coin to who is going to tell you any more clearly than you will hear right here in the forum that the coin is a curiosity at best and is not an error or variety, nor is it worth a premium value that would warrant any third party grading fees...even if you could find one that would mention the tooling marks on the holder. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but when that's all the coin warrants, I'm not one to make up stories to make it sound like it's more than it is.
Umm, they also aren't die chips. Die chips don't just 'happen' then sit there long enough for flow lines to develop around them. Die chips continue to grow and develop through die use, which keeps their edges nice and sharp throughout the remainder of the die's life. Nice try, no go.
From general observation, the "S" mint mark on the 1992S Kennedy doesn't seem to match the symmetry of either of the ones you indicate. I have seen die gouges that produce such raised symmetrical shapes, that can drive a person crazy. I looked to see if I had a 1992S to photograph and post, but I don't collect Kennedy's anymore. No offense taken for opinions, as that is exactly what they are. Welcome to the Forum! Jim
