Are these pictures good enough to (accurately) grade this 1909 s-vdb?

Hello C.T coin friends,
I would like to know what is the actual grade of this coin. It was bought as MS at a B&M auction in 1988.
I hope the photos are good enough to allow grading.

From the photos, I'd say 63. Nice coin.

I don't see any major marks so I go 64.

 

I'd give this coin a MS64/65

 

p.s. it may grade higher -- in fact the coin looks mark-free-enough to grade 64-66 -- but I can't tell from the photos how good the luster truly is, so I hedged my bet and guessed 63.

 

I am not on my good monitor, but from what I can see, there is pretty much only one nick on the coin - by the "TR". Nice strike. I would call it a 65, but the TPG's don't seem to like either brown nor woodgrain as well as I do. My guess is they would give it a 64. If it looks more lusterous in hand, matbe they would agree with the 65.

No pictures, even the perfect ones, would be good enough to accurately grade a coin.

 

true . pictures are simply clear'er distortions. Thats why they started 3rd party slab services. So you get , what it says??? well not today. Now we have authenticator services for the 3rd party graders. What a joke. But honestly, seeing what I saw from these photos, I'll stand by my grading of MS 64/65

 

I really like the reverse on this coin. That to me is the seller on this piece. I would say it would be in the MS64BR range. May hit 65

I just don't have the experience grading Lincolns (but i can grade a Draped Bust or Liberty Capped Large cent pretty good by now i think!).

As mentioned, Bowers & Merena graded this coin as "Mint State' with wood grain toning.
So i always thought it would be MS 60 or so using todays numbering system.
(In the same sale they also had another graded Gem BU. You have to wonder what that one would grade today).

I wish i had bought a few more of these s-vdb's back then! but i am sure everyone wishes that.
