Does anybody know where I could find a list of the National Parks that will be honored on future quarters? Will there be just 5 Parks honored or will it be 50? I am confused. Will the honor only go to Parks or to National Monuments/Memorials also? For instance, the Statue of Liberty is not a National Park but it is a National Monument. Will Monuments be honored too?
I think there's going to be one for each state. It won't just be national parks, because obviously not all states have a national park. I think they are using the term "national site" or something like that. So most of them will be parks, but some states will use monuments and some others might need to use a national historic site, national forest, national grassland, or something like that. It's going to be really interesting to see what certain states are able to come up with, because there are no easy options for a lot states. I mean, what the heck is Kansas going to come up with?
Here is a partial list. It doesnt seem like monuments will be put on the quarters. http://www.nationalparkquarterprogram.com/parks.asp
Park Quarters You are right. Many states have no actual National Parks. New York State has none that I know of. We have Statue of Liberty National Monument and other Monuments but no actual National Parks. We have Gateway National Recreational Area, but again no Parks.
Yeah, New York has no national parks. They do have the largest state park in the country though. I think it's going to be a real challenge for a lot of the prairie states to find something distinctive, and the more I think about, the more I think a lot of the mountainous designs are going to blur together. A few states have something that pops out immediately... CA with Yosemite (probably Half Dome...Joshua Tree might be an interesting alternative) WY with Yellowstone (probably Old Faithful revisited somehow) UT (I'm guessing they'll do something with Arches) AK (Mount McKinley, most likely) Then there are some states that have amazing national parks, but I'm curious to see how they'll translate in to a distinctive coin. For instance, Acadia for Maine...or Glacier for Montana. Beautiful parks, but how do you capture it on a coin when there's no one distinctive feature that jumps out at you? I think this is going to take some serious creativity...I'd like to see my home state of Colorado do something with aspen leaves for this series. It's what we're known for as much as anything. You could try to throw a major summit on like Pike's or Long's or Sneffels, but most people wouldn't recognize it--not unique enough.
