Any thoughts on my indian penny set worth. I am somewhat novice to coins and inherited my collection. Most of them I would guess are G to VF.

It is only missing the 1877. Anyone want to give me an 1877. lol

Also what is the best way to take close ups photos like I have seen on other posts. I have a canon xti. Do you use a special lense?

Nice collection Briana! Only one left, that 77' is a though one though. As for taking close ups you should use the Macro function, I'm not sure where it would be on your camera but it usually has a flower sign. (On my Canon SD750 it's in the function setting)

That's a nice collection. I'd check ebay for that last coin. Or buy a roll and see what you can get. It's worth a shot if you want to finish the set.

very nice coins, briana! Someone must have loved you very much to leave you such a nice set of indians! The 1877 is a tough date, and you won't find it in a roll, but there are plenty for sale if you ever decide that you want one.

My suggestion to you is to find a good book on Indian Head Cents, maybe one written by Q. David Bowers, and read about these coins and learn about what you have. Learn to grade them. Read everything that you can about them, they are a fascinating series.

That's a waste of money, I'd never try for it on ebay, much less in a roll. You will never get a real 1877 that way. Very rare and difficult to find. If you ever buy an 1877, make sure it is authenticated by a top tpg. (PCGS or NGC) There are so many fakes of these out there it's not funny. I'd only buy that one in person from a reputable dealer. That last coin, (1877) will be very expensive as well.

Mintage is 852,500 and in G-4, value is over $575.00+. VF-20 is $1400+. MS-63 is over $3800+. (Not a coin to try to buy on ebay.) JMHO

Great Advice! looking for an 1877 in a roll is like winning the lottery.

Sorry... I'm sort of new to this hadn't actually looked up much on Indian head pennies. I didn't know how rare it was. Just trying to be helpful I saw on the ebay auctions that they had Indian head pennies in them. :) Now I know. I hadn't actually bought any I still have the ones at work to go through

There are some out there, but I agree that extreme caution needs to be exercised if buying a raw one. An auctioneer friend of mine was going thru an attic at the home where he was to auction off the estate. Stashed away in a box was a crudely made homemade display case with a virtually complete year set of cents from 1798 to 1902, and yes, there was an XF 1877 in it. From newspapers used as backing, along with a few additional advertisements, and the date of the newest coin, it appears as though those coins were placed into the case in 1902 at the latest and likely forgotten about for a long, long time. Most of the later years were very high grade. This was the same auction where I purchased the W.H.J. counterstamped coin that I showed in another thread.

Thank for the info. My grandma left me her whole collection which she had collected for over 50 years. Here's a link to my mercury dimes set as well.

I am slowly learning about coins and adding some of the cheaper easier stuff as I go like proof and mint sets. ~$500 or greater is a bit much for a novice like me to spend on that 1877. From reading other posts not having knowledge of coins will get you into trouble when buying the more expensive coins.

You are talking about a set that runs in the $500-$600 range.
