wow you know i actually agree...i would have blown so much money if i hadn't started collecting from circulation first, getting my feet wet, and to be honest i still feel queasy when i think about buying certain coins, afraid i will miss something.

I agree with this if you are a newbie with limited finances. However if you have the finances go for the keys, slabbed if possible buy the highest quality you can afford. Live within your budget. Key dates will only increase in value EVERY YEAR.

Since I like Lincolns, the 1909 S VDB has an average increase of 9.2 % since 1950. Check any coin value book throughout the years. Now the 1909 P Lincoln has increased much less in value, pretty much nominal.

I guarentee in ten years the S VDB will make you much more of a return than the 1909 P.

I agree with everyone's advice and don't have much to add! I would recommend that when purchasing from Coin Dealers at a shop or at a Coin Show, try to purchase in volume if possible. In this way, you can ask for a discount and many Coin Dealers will give you 5%, 10% and even 15% or more of a discount for purchasing in volume. Also, like Harry said, buy the Keys and Semi-Keys if you can afford them but try to get them as cheap as possible. Also, besides purchasing Keys and Semi-Keys, you should learn all of the sleepers (i.e. low mintage coins that just don't seem to bring the same prices as other low mintage coins within a Series and Type) by heart and purchase as much of them (again as cheap as possible) as you can. The sleepers will one day take off in price and you might be sitting on a Gold Mine per say!

I have advocated buying the keys first, but always with a caveat:

    After your tuition buys....

Don't misunderstand me at all, you must learn before you go buy a key date. And I would NEVER recommend them raw.

I much prefer to do it the other way around where you come up with specific questions and ask them....then we come up with answers that satisfy the question. Something as open ended as 'what would you share' is basically asking for my life story. I have spent three decades immersed in coins and have a TON of information and advice, but I generally don't just offer it outright without it being an answer to a specific question.
