I agree they serve no purpose except to fill jars with them and take up space. I do not even accept them and people will not even give them for transactions in my business ( Auto Repair ) I either say keep the change or they say keep the change Everything will soon be monitized up to 5c to follow inflation and if you do not get my drift - NO they should not replace it with another waste of our tax payer dollars.
That is what the "copper" coins from most countries are made of. But even those are a nuisance to deal with, in my not quite so humble opinion. Here in Euroland we have the 1 and 2 cent coins, copper plated steel alright, but in two euro countries cash totals are rounded nevertheless. Not because it would cost too much to produce the pieces, but because retailers and even many customers do not like having to deal with them. So even if the US used a different composition, there would still be the question of "are they worth it?", I think. They are not - but neither here in Germany nor in the US the government shares my view. Christian
Excellent idea. Collectors will still get their way, but they will be covering the cost of producing them. Then we can work on eliminating those nasty dollar bills...
As much as I like the cent, I think it has outlived it's usefulness. I agree, it makes making change nicer...but things could be simply rounded to the nearest $0.05 when dealing with cash. If you really feel you need that extra couple cents, then pay with a debit card.
I like the penny, which is why I would like it to be taked out of circulation. If the penny is out of circulation, it will be looked at as an "antique coin" and might bring more numismatic value for the older pennies. Besides, pennies are almost useless when you are buying something. Hopefully we can say goodbye to an era where people hate on the penny and hello to one where people hate on the nickel!
probably wishful thinking... keep in mind that some years there were hundreds of millions, up to BILLIONS of cents minted. I do agree that pennies are almost obsolete these days. Then again I think that all change is becoming obsolete. I am beginning to notice a trend toward total reliance upon electronic money... credit/debit cards and the like.
Very well said. I want to say that the US mint loses money on the cent and nickel but makes money on the dime and quarter.
I agree. Look at the Washington Quarter...it has been out of production for 10 years now (the "original" Washington that ended in 1998) and very few of those are worth more than face after 1964. It's because they made so many of them, they are common in high grades. I know there are some scarcer dates, but for the most part they are common. The Lincoln cent would be the same way if they stopped making them. There are just too many to be worth a premium.
... it won't be discontinued for a long time. Because lots of people like the penny. Democracy in action here . . .
