If the host coin (the coin that is copied) has wear the counterfeit coins produced by those dies will show the same "wear". BUT, if the counterfeit coins are struck they will have luster - even on those worn areas. Genuine coins do not have luster on worn areas. I have heard that some counterfeiters are circulating some of their counterfeits of key dates to make them look less suspicious.
I talked to one guy that helped stop a counterfeiter (local). The counterfeiter was changing the dates on common coins then making dies out of them and then artificially wearing the coins for the same reason.
Sorry you can't count on that. They are counterfeiting some worn coins, and on some pieces they fake them in high grade and then artificially wear them down. Wear and lack of luster is not a guarantee of authenticity.
That explains a lot. I have one of these Morgans! I new it was fake. When you flip the coin, the image on the other side is upside down. communists. Well does anyone want to buy a real Chinese mINTED Morgan?
Krauz, Now that you have 10 posts you can offer to sell (or buy) items in the Open forum. I have plenty of those Chinese counterfeits myself but someone here may take it off your hands. Don't expect to get much for it though.
I've seen them around popping up in the local Pawn Shops. They look completely unnatural compared to the real morgans. The biggest giveaway is they are much more "shiny" than older Morgans.
