This is by far my nicest example. Just got it today. What do you think of the grade? I will reveal later what the dealer thought and what I think.
That's a nice coin! I don't know if I'll ever collect buffalo nickels, but I really want to have at least one nice one. Can I ask how much one of that quality set you back? Feel free to send a PM if you'd prefer not to post it.
Thanks! I don't really collect buffalos either, but I couldn't pass this one up. I paid $30 for it so I wasn't really out too much. I bought it for my type set, but now that I am looking at it, it is way too nice for a folder lol. What do you think it grades?
It's probably a MS-65. I can't tell the difference between 65,66 and 67 on these with large, high quality images anyway. There's no way to adequately grade the coin with pictures that small. I guessed based on what I could see, the price paid and the population of them.
The fields look really clean. If there's wear, I can't see it. It looks like it should pass as a 66 to me but I don't believe you got a 66 for $30 so I'll stick with 65. If it's less than 65 I would be shocked.
Looks like a really good strike too, lots of braid and fur details. Very nice, I am thinking MS64 $30 is a steal.
My only concern, (and it could be the angle or the lighting) is that the luster looks relatively flat and I don't see any golden hints that you usually see in later UNC buffalos.
Im sure it is just the lighting or the angle but it looks rather monotone to me when you look at the detail in some of the features like the fur vs the fields. Which would at first glance make me want to look for signs of cleaning or dipping, or at least may effect the grade because of reduced luster. but I am sure it is just my first impression and would see it different in hand, I am not too good at judging from pics. Without a doubt a very nice coin and a steal at what you paid for it, I would keep it in the type set and not send it in for slabbing.
If you think it might hit 66 or better then maybe, but it isn't a high enough dollar coin unless it is a real high grade. It is just my preference but I wouldn't slab anything that wasn't either high dollar or particularly rare. Besides I don't have a good UNC buffalo for my type set, they all seem to make it into my buffalo set! So maybe I am projecting on you a bit because that is what I need in my set.
Okay I think I will take the chance that it comes back with a good grade. The way I see it, if it is a 64, I lose the grading fees. If it is a 65, I break even, and if it comes back 66, I make $50. Pretty good odds I think.
