Numismedia puts it at $13.20, and their price is usually a little higher than actual sale prices, Cointrends had one that sold on eBay for 11. So if you like the coin it sounds like the price isn't too bad.
I would agree with Raider34 since it is slabed by PCGS they are usually a very conservative grading company. Considering the grading and shipping fees for this coin are more than they are asking for the coin. Let me know if you turn this down as I would buy it
The person who sent it in probably thought they were going to get a 66, but it came back 65 so they are taking their losses now.
I have all the 1955S cents in MS65RD a person can handle for $5 each. Why pay extra for the slab? I mean, really...these things aren't worth anything more than that until you hit MS66RD, and even then I'd sell them for $12. I think people are placing a little too much value in the slab here. Simply put, a 1955S cent in MS65RD isn't worth the slabbing fee, so it's included in the price of the coin. The 'price guides' are all a little whacked when it comes to values for MS65 late-date wheat cents.
You said shipped. I would hope that means including postage and handling. Is there a return policy? Would you have to pay for postage if it comes to you a lot less than expected? As coppercoins pointed out your basically paying for the plastic. Probably go to his web site and see if he does have them for less.
I agree, he didn't...but should have. Buying an MS65RD 1955S cent in a slab is - well, sort of just wrong. The plastic is worth more than the coin.
I guarantee any coin I sell as a 'grade' is that grade...to the point that if any one of the coins I sell is submitted and comes back a lower grade, I will pay the fee PLUS return the purchase price to the person who bought the coin from me. Yes, I am very confident in my grading skills on Lincoln cents. I've seen thousands of graded Lincolns and know how the companies grade them. It helps to know a few of their graders personally too.
All I have in inventory currently, but there's a LOT more where these came from.. lincolncent.com page with 1955S cents
While that is true, I won't pay extra for the slab. It's just a piece of plastic. The coin in the slab is the key and thus where the value is.
Very true, and coins that aren't worth the cost of slabbing are often sold for an inflated price just because of the slab. I have seen a large number of $3-$10 coins in slabs, and they often charge $15-$25 for them just to recover the fees for not being able to grade coins themselves, sending substandard coins in expecting the moon in return. Why pay people for their ignorance?
