This one I think is a 1972 S double -die obv. It says slight dd on date which looks like it at end of 2. Then there is what appears to be dd on "LIBERTY". Also Slight DD on IGWT. What do you guys think?
The rims are not flat and the edges are not square like I would expect to see on a Proof coin. That's why I asked.
The thing to remember is that San Fran was still minting business strikes during this time, so there are plenty of them out there.
Are there raised lines ( die scratches) between Abe's chin and the "19" of the date? The only one I am aware of for a business strike type 1972-S is CDDO-001 ( Crawford). It isn't on Coppercoins or in CPG....And the doubling goes the opposite direction in "GOD" as shown by your photo. Can you show "WE" "IN" and "LIBE" ? I don't want to get your hopes up, as I would normally think it is not, but the "LIBERTY" photo is intriguing and worth seeing the rest for me. Jim
There are a couple of BS's and a MDO listed in the CONECA listings. http://www.conecaonline.org/content/lincolndoubleddies19701979.html#_1972-S Larry Nienaber
Not a proof and not a doubled die. Not a proof and not a doubled die. It shows slight master die doubling (as most all 1972's do) and some minor mechanical doubling. A very common coin - we see them daily.
I went to atrox001 sites he mentioned. The site mentions 1972-S MDO-0001, and it states that there is a gouge in the upper S and R in IGWT. I can see the R part now.
The MDO means that it is Master Die Obverse ( doubling) as Ben said above, and the "R" does seem to indicate this. Sooner or later something big will pop! Jim
It may not be worth much…but if you collect die varieties having nice examples of the master dies in your collection is something that can be a challenge. This one is nice because there were two working hubs with markers. That would mean there may be two examples to find for the P, D, S, and PR…eight total. Larry Nienaber
Not to most - I send them straight to the bank if fact, Not to most - I send them straight to the bank if fact I'm going there right now.
Double Die 1972 and 1972-s Hi Jessash, Searching info to submit a 1972 in question, Your photo is so in detail very nice. Is yours from photo or scanner? I did find more info explaining double die, personally I'm still confused. I'm even in quality control in small plastic parts, I guess it takes experience and being able to view all exact differences. gazz posted this link explaining more, http://www.geocities.com/NCADD/educational1.html let me know about your photo if you get a chance. Thanks
1. The coin in this thread is business strike...no question about it. It is NOT a proof coin. 2. The coin in this thread is not a doubled die. No question about it. It exhibits master die doubling just like BHP3rd said. 3. The coin is photographed. There is no way a scanner can get results like that. 4. The value of this coin is the same as any normal 1972S business strike coin for the grade (because that's what this is), whatever the grade is...probably less than a dollar retail, or around $2 per roll.
