I had self imposed a rule that I wasn't going to buy a coin for a few more weeks, but I went ahead and bought a morgan anyway--as long as one's having fun, no harm no foul, right?

More importantly, I figured that if I didn't spend over $20, there was no room to get truly hosed on a deal. So here's what I ended up acquiring:

Thoughts from the experts? I know it's not one of the rare ones, but I liked the coin.

Well, I'd say there's a good chance that it's AU, not BU...but it's hard to say from those pics. Either way, like you said, it's not like you're going to lose a ton of money.

Even if its not MS-63..and it's hard to tell from the pics..the obverse pic is too dark & too small..for $20 + shipping..definitely a good deal..

Yeah, should be interesting to see the actual condition of the coin once it arrives. I'm obviously hoping that the guy's rating was genuine and accurate, but I know it's caveat emptor, and it's probably a reasonably effective semi-grift to be overly "generous" about one's rating speculation in the hopes that the less informed will take a nibble.

Thanks! Any idea how much it would cost to have it graded by submitting it to pcgs via an authorized dealer?

I'm not sure I want to buy a silver membership, which would put the cost of the coin grading at $65 when you factor in the membership fee. But if it's not too much to go through a dealer, I might do it just for the fun of it--pending what the coin looks like on arrival.

Don't even think about getting it graded until you can post good photos here for an opinion. The picture is so bad the coin could be anything from XF up, and may have some damage that is not obvious. It was a good purchase for under $20. But paying to have it slabbed will almost certainly ensure that your total cost is too high.

So the coin arrived today, which was pretty exciting given that this seems to mark my first foray into serious collecting.

I'll try to get some photos on tonight--anxious to hear what you guys think of it.

The face side definitely has a bronze shading to it, which adds character I think. The back side is lighter, more of a light gold color, though some of the periphery is starting to darken to more of a bronze.

What's exciting to me is that there appears to be very little wear, if any. I can still see some definition on the eagle neck and chest, the hair above the ear on the front side, etc.

On the negative side, there dies to be two faint scratches on the back, one about a milimeter in length, the other about two milimeters long. And the most obvious imperfections are these two very small dents around the edge of the back.

Anyhow, will try to get the photos up tonight.
