Puerto Rico~A LOW mintage quarter?

For starters anyone that knows me also realizes that I'm NOT big on the modern stuff. The whole quarter program falls into that category as far as I'm concerned.
What's a low mintage in the series anyway? Less than 250 million? That's way high IMHO.

So what's with the Puerto Rico quarters you might ask. Hearing some buzz that the mint has already finished production and they were just slated for realease March 30. Some coin dealers (including my boss) are keeping an eye on this.
Should it turn out to be a low (by "modern" standards) quarter I may actually procure a roll or two.

2009 has been an odd year for both dealers and collectors to this point. We are able to get the Washington D.C, Native American or Presidential Dollars but seems we have an awful time locating both P and D mint.

It's not just happening in our shop but all over. We always trade with one another but it seems we all have the same stuff. None of us has what the other guy wants and when they do the premiums are silly.

I'm not suggesting that people dump too much money into these types of coins by any means. For all we know the Feds could dump tons of it on the market unanounced. The mint could sell them at face to stimulate circulation.

What I AM saying is keep your eyes and ears open. As little respect as I have for this stuff there may actually be some worth holding on to.

A definite possibility Clembo......and the PR rolls can be had via the US mint (P&D) albeit at a hefty premium.

Based on the "low" numbers and how the 2009 cent craze is, I bought 2 mint sets just for some speculation. I figured I would flip one and hopefully make at least the premium back that I paid on the first one.

I don't usually hop on the modern-mint flip-it bandwagon, but even I broke down and bought a load of P.R. quarters when I heard the mintage was limited to 62M. I'm hoping the next quarters have an even lower mintage.

Yes 09 is out. The first 09 cent was released weeks ago and the next one will be released 5/14. 09 quarters have already started too, the Puerto Rico set is on sale now.

I guess we are talking 2 or 3 different things, I meant the 2 roll P & D set that is on sale now. However, the 2009 Silver and Clad Quarter Proof sets are on sale too so I am guessing you mean the complete sets, the one with every denomination of coin?

Now that's scary ain't it? ONLY 62 million. When I look back on older coins under a million is a good indication. Go further and under 100,000.

Still, I'm with you Borgovan. I have no plans of loading up from the mint but if we get them in for under $15 a roll I'll consider it.

A little more insight here though folks. The Territory quarters are not well "publicized" with the people that collected state quarters. I'm not talking Cointalkers here I'm talking the average person off the street that collected all 50 states. Really not a small accomplisment as it took ten years.
When they hear there are more many just turn away.

Food for thought as it were.

the mintage figs I heard were 139mil. 53 mil for the P and 86 mil for the D. Thats significantly higher than 62mil but not near as high as say the 193 mil of just P for the oklahoma quarter.

Please no one take this personally... I have a rant coming on

The mintage on this coin is still astronomical... combined the P's and D's mintage is going to be somewhere around 139 million coins.

Assuming each quarter is of proper thickness (.069 of an inch)

    139,000,000 x .069in = 9,591,000in

    9,591,000in / 12inches = 799,250 ft

    799,250ft / 5280ft = 151.373 Miles

so this means that if you stacked all of the Puerto Rico quarters from both mints on top of each other flat.... it would be over 151 miles tall...

That's just about 2 times as high as Earths atmosphere.... or 27.5 Mt. Everest's tall.

    :rolling:

    ok, rant over...
