I think I asked this in the wrong forum. I would post a pic but have not figured how to here yet so could use a few tips on that also. I have a 1986d B.U. Jefferson nickel still in it's mint packaging that has the mintmark tipped over to the right and nearly touching the rim. I'm looking at the coin straight on with the bust straight up, so it is not a visual deception. Can anyone tell me if this is an error or was common for the date. Does it have any extra value? Just curious. Thanks a bunch.:hammer:
Good question and 'Welcome' to the forum:hail: I know that the mint mark was applied to the hub by hand and will vary in location on cents and probably on the nickel as well. I await the answer.
Please post a photo - There are a few things that have popped into my mind on what this could be, but we will need to see photos to make sure... Speedy
Up until 1990 the mintmark was punched into each working die by hand. So its position and orientation will vary.
I would love to post a photo but apparently Coin talk will not accept Tiff's. I'm not sure how to convert them to Jpeg's. If anyone has any suggestions I would love to hear them. My scanner only does Tiff's that i'm aware of.:headbang:

Funny, I have one of these too. Can't post a pic right now, but on mine it looks like the D has fallen on its side (towards the right). This is actually a question I had wanted to ask.
