"June" quarter from the 1999 Canadian monthly series. I found this coin in my change... I thought it at first to be a clip error, but after some research I thought maybe it's an incomplete planchet error? I really don't know. There are no visible scratches or marks around the missing notch it's actually very smooth. And notice that there is another, smaller notch on the rim exactly opposite the larger one (on the bottom)... I wouldn't think it was done after minting... any input would be appreciated.
Don't know if this will help any, but here's a side view. (and ok, on closer inspection of the scan, yeah, it is marked on the side. But the top part where the part of the rim is missing, is very smooth)
It's a curved clip. These are sometimes also called "incomplete planchet" errors. I prefer to use the term "clip". Mint employees refer to them as "cut-outs".
Thanks I just noticed another post with the same type of error on some US Wheat Pennies... I guess this is fairly common then. Does the fact that it's a commemorative quarter make it valuable at all? (Just out of curiosity... I wouldn't sell it. It's the first error I've ever found. lol)
I would think its presence on a commemorative quarter give the coin enhanced value. I don't have a good idea of its market value, but it won't be very much.
That's ok... I was just curious if the fact that it was commemorative made a difference... thanks! I know very little about errors, so you all can expect lots of questions about them from me...
