I will now announce my new grading company: NAGS........New Arizona Grading Service And my buddy in Conneticut, HAGS, Hartford Area Grading Service, we will be in direct competition for 1st spouse, Shriver commems and SBA coins, thats all were are grading. NAGS and HAGS will only grade coins with old women on them, and we promise to be strict and fair
I knew it! You've been a NAG in disguise all this time and you're finally coming out of the coin sorter. Ribbit
Ok you will have to excuse my horrible photo skills lol But you have to see what I mean, look at the distance between PCGS and the top of the box! Here is the back of that fake PCGS slab from the auction you posted above: And here are my scans of a genuine PCGS Slab from a very detailed VAM9 1878CC Morgan which also matches exactly every other PCGS Slab I have for this slab era.
Great job PG, of showing why it's a counterfeit slab! :thumb: I never took the time to look at the slab, I only looked at the coin and forwarded it on to Ron to have him figure out the slab. He's seen most, if not all, of the counterfeit PCGS slabs so he can spot them in a second. :goofer: Ribbit
This is a genuine holder. The seller is my friend. I bought this coin from a coin show in China when traveling over there. HandsomeToad contacted my friend. My friend is very sad about your discussion here. He called me about everything. It's really bad talking on the back of other people. Here are some clear pictures for the hologram:
Well I can tell you this for certain, it is different than the reverse of all my PCGS holders, which match each other for this period of time. The spacing on the top is less on your friends on both the text and St. Gaudens coin. Couple that with the fact that Ron Guth (who is listed as an expert on the PCGS website) claims that it is not real I tend to wonder. Your friends: The normal PCGS slab: Perhaps your friend purchased this slab not knowing it was fake, but everything certainly points to it being a fake. I appreciate your friends concern, but it is most likely of no fault of his own, he should not feel badly.
Thanks for the reply. Nothing personal. Actually, I bought this coin and sold it to my friend. My friend is not happy about me now. The picture on ebay is not clear enough. How Ron Guth make such a quick judgement? Experts never make mistake? I don't think PCGS can make every holder perfect. Should we have some service to grade and certify genuinity for the holders too? Just too ridiculous.
Ok well that makes sense then, PCGS issued a statement last year addressing the Chinese fake slabs which began popping up all over the place. http://www.pcgs.com/articles/article_view.chtml?artid=5286&universeid=313 I'm really sorry man, looks like it was you who were taken.
Are you serious about this SPACING? PCGS alway make perfect spacing hologram? My friend, take a look at here: The text and St. Gaudens coin is too low: http://cgi.ebay.com/2006-W-20th-ANI...5|66:2|65:12|39:1|240:1318|301:0|293:1|294:50 The text and St. Gaudens coin is too high: http://cgi.ebay.com/2009-D-1c-PCGS-...5|66:2|65:12|39:1|240:1318|301:0|293:3|294:50 According to your standard, they are all FAKE? Right? You can do a research on ebay, there are so many non-perfect hologram.
Late to this thread..but earlier today I was reading another thread about Dominion Grading Services. Evidently, they have a photo taken of every coin they slab. So if a prospective buyer doubts the authenticity of either coin and/or holder, he can actually retrieve a picture of the coin that was graded. Obviosly, if the holder is counterfeit, he won't get a match using the coin ID. This seems like an elegant solution to remove any doubt about authenticity. Also, comments about the accuracy of Dominion's grading in the Cointalk thread were overwhelmingly positive. I am going to try them for the first coin I send in to grade.
I just think it's really odd that there is a slew of Chinese fake slabs showing up, enough so PCGS makes an announcement detailing the "typical" chinese fake. This coin was purchased IN China, and the reverse looks different than the 6 of that TYPE in my posession, which are genuine. So perhaps (as you insinuate) PCGS just haphazardly makes these things, and sometimes the Saint Gaudens is centered, sometimes its up a little, sometimes down a little. How is it then that every one I have ever seen of this era looks identical (save ebay auction images of course)? Maybe you are right, but I suspect this coin is fake. Evidently so does the seller because the images have been removed from the listing just now. If you are right, excuse my ignorance I am relatively new at this. I am however, not stupid.
After I read this thread, I asked my friend removed that listing and the photos. If it's so controversial, I want take some responsibility because I bought it in the first place. But, anyway, PersianGuy, thanks for the sharing. Have a nice weekend.
Although my opinions about the value of TPG's differs from yours, this is still one of the best posts I have read in months and I have nominated it for the clinker award.
My self slabbing grading service will be POS (Paul's Oldtime Service). We will encapsulate your coin with only one of the following grades: CIRC, AU, BU. We will market it to those that hate TPG's, the sheldon scale, the CAC, higher prices for graded coins, but still want their coins protected. We will also have an additional feature that will allow for quick and easy organization of your POS's. Each grade will have it's own color label. BU=light brown, AU=dark brown, CIRC=really dark brown. As an added value, we will guarantee authentication. Every coin will be a guaranteed POS coin. At POS, we care about your coins. We will be the first TPG to ensure that every POS is wrapped carefully in the softest toilet paper money can buy prior to shipping. We don't want anything to happen to that POS. Any customer that is not 100% satisfied with their POS grading experience can have their coins graded by our sister company SOL (Stupid Overgraded Lots). If you are at SOL, we know you are not happy. At this point, you just tell us the grade you want, and we put it on the label. Remember that SOL, still ships your coins using the best toilet paper money can buy. Thank you for considering us for your numismatic grading needs. Remember, if you are not happy with your POS, your SOL respresenative will wipe your worries away.:goofer:
Ocean you shouldn't be so mad at the group. It's not about the individual as it is about the coin. Unfortunately the hologram is hard to photograph. I think it looks different based on lighting, if a flash was used & the camera. It may sound like a pack a wolves attack but it really isn't. Believe me there are probably hundreds of similar threads on coins sold on ebay. These conversations do help us to learn more. I do commend you on joining the conversation to back up the authenticity of the coin.
I really hope my posts don't seem like personal attacks, because they were intended to discuss (basically) the reasons I suspected that Ron Guth so quickly dismissed this slab as fake. The only predominent difference I can see is the reverse. Being newish to collecting I can DEFINITELY be wrong, and if I am, my apologies. Someone should really contact this Ron guy and see what he says about what to look for in a fake slab. We could all benefit from this info.
You forgot the most important feature desired, the ability to easily open the slabs and swap the coins out, sorta like a musical slabs game, if'n you knows what I mean. Ribbit
Since we've taken off on the counterfeit PCGS slab, here are a couple more counterfeit PCGS slabs for reference purposes and the 1878 is a dead ringer, considering some fool stuck the coin in backwards. :goofer: Ribbit Ps: Has anyone here ever seen a U.S. coin stuck in an authentic PCGS slab backwards/flipped?
Please provide pics of the obverse on both of these and also provide a pic of the obverse on the original coin being discussed, since there are diagnostics on the obverse label that out these as a counterfeit and not necessarily the reverse label. We can use all to compare to each other to see if there are differences. :kewl: Ribbit
