Hi,i've been collecting proof american silver eagles and just finished the set with some extras.(20th anniversary set) and the 3 burnished coins from 2006-2008. Now i am looking at the 1999-2008 silver proof sets.i was just wondering if this was a good investment. I already have the 1999-2008 clad set. Any help would be greatly appreciated.thanks beck.....
If you get them cheap it could be good, but if you over-pay it is a bad investment. As for the possibility of an overall increase in value on 99-09 silver proof sets it is hard to say. Some coins pop up in price for weird things. For instance the IL quarter sells for $25 to $30 a roll since obama became president.
If you are asking about the coins as an investment then my best advice and probably the best advice of most in this forum will be this: Coins are NOT a good investment! Period! Never, ever, EVER as a planned vehicle. Sometimes you can make a profit on coins, but I don't think that you can just pick a coin or set of coins that is going to appreciate except over a considerable length of time. Problem is, that over that same period of time you could have invested it and made much more money in other vehicles in most cases.
I made a big mistake when I said investment,Because I don't collect for investment but for pleasure and an obsession that keeps me wondering what to try and collect in my price range.
FYI the 1999 silver is the "key" the 2001 is a "semi-key" so try to get them first. Its a nice collection, the mintages may be high but the demand os even higher. If you enjoyed the proof ASE's the silver state quarter proofs will look very handsome next to them
