I'd be really interested in poking through some non-US material but I don't know where to find it except on the Internet. The local coin shop doesn't carry much that I can see. I'm always wary of buying things online unless I know the seller well. What are some good on-line sellers? Or where else could I look? Thanks, Ryan
EBay Other internet auction sites Coin dealers Coin shows Advertisers in such publications as Krause's World Coin News The buy/sell/trade postings in our Open and Auction listings, or on other coin forums. You can >> click here << for more information about World Coin News. BTW, until you are very comfortable that you know what you are bidding on, do not buy expensive coins on EBay or other general internet auction sites.
Internet search Ryan When I started i did searches in the countries I was interested in and found local coin shops, who had web sites. I don't do all the bidding wars on ebay, but when I deal with a foreign shop or member of a foreigh forum. I have not been disappointed.
I have found friends and acquaintances to be excellent sources for world coins. If you let lots of people know you are interested in buying foreign coins off of them, you'd be surprised what people pull out of their junk boxes and sock drawers from trips they took a long time ago, or odd coins they were left as tips at a restaurant. I work with people who travel a lot as part of their job, so that's great, too. My father-in-law gave me envelopes full of coins from a trip to Europe in the 80s; I've had friends give me coins from their honeymoons or cruises; my sister-in-law works as a barrista, and she gave me some interesting coins from the tip cup on the counter; my dad gave me lots of coins from Viet Nam. I noticed also that you said you didn't "see" any coins at your coin dealer--but I'd be sure to ask. EDITED TO ADD: Of course, this probably won't work if you're looking for gold or silver...
OzRadio, I started collecting the euro when it was released in 2002. After filling numerous albums for family and friends I turned to the commemorative silver euro and developed a trading network all over Europe. Well, that is working great but the call of the darkside was strong so now I am venturing back in time, seeking out silver crowns or half crowns that are affordable. Actually I trade for about anything silver or unique as my world fever has gotten worse. I am still amazed what this internet has done for me and my collecting habit. I could never just collect U.S. coins again after seeing the history and the beauty that many of the world mints are cranking out. I also target low mintage issues when I can get my paws on them. Guess I would have to say this computer has opened up a whole new world for me!
charger, Just curious as to what U.S. coins you are looking for? I am sure there are plenty of U.S. collectors willing to do some trading.
