As with The PCGS forum, there are a lot of kids there too but don't join in the conversations. Here too there may well be a lot of kids but not members or if members don't say much. Many kids think they don't have much to add to a post so they just read it and then move on. One smart kid on the PCGS forum some time back was smart enough to know this and attempted to start a separate forum section for YN's only or mostly for YN's. Didn't go over though. Many members here also have kids interested in coins but I wonder if they are allowed to join here as members? And too just what is to be considered a YN? Possilbly up to teens, twenties? The one thing I remember about the PCGS attempted giveaways for YN's was the amount of rather older individuals that pretended to be YN's for the free items. Not sure how that could be avoided here either.
That my friend has to be one of the funniest post I have read since I have been here. Carl, Thats an excellent point. how would we verify ages, and what would the ages me?
Me too...I have coins that dealers really dont want because they are inundated with them, but I'll be damned if I will put them into circulation. I have no one to give them to. I even found a kid on-line on youtube in Great Britain who was collecting Canadian cents and he said on his video that if there was anyone in Canada that could send him some coins it would be great. (The way he worded it was..come on..its only a cent). I sent him approx 30 of the dates he needed and he has proudly has got them showcased in a Whitman Album. So, if there is any desire to include Canadian Coinage, along with all my 2 x 2 doubles of Lincoln cents required for this great effort, please let me know.
Hmm…good point. I have two kids and having to worry about people taking advantage is always an issue, sad as it may be. Maybe some kind of “adult members with kids” forum??? I don’t know… I wouldn’t know how to verify. I would bet someone would find a way to mess that up too. Something to ponder. Sorry to be negative, reality sometimes can be disappointing.
As we all know individuals on the internet could be anyone, anywhere, doing anything. If someone was to say they are 15 years old there is no way to verify that unless a member knows that individual personally. As I noted there was a kid, about 13 or so, on the PCGS forum some years back that you could see he was that age since he wrote a few articles for Coin World and they noted his information. Just for that I sent him a pile of wheat cents that I just had to many of. However, it still is a problem to know just how old someone on the internet really is. And if to young, their parents may not allow them to converse with a bunch of individuals that are much older. Ancient in my case. This is a great idea thought to inspire the future of this hobby. However, just how to do it is something else.
I still have a 26 year old in the house and he does'nt collect coins. Dang!! He does collect pocket knives tho.
I'm wondering if it would be an invasion of privacy to ask student age members to send a copy of their student ID's to say, Peter and kept confidential, would work? Or a letter sent via snail mail to Peter from a teacher stating the students age? Just a thought. On anther related note. Does anyone know of a source where I could aquire contribution of folders a nd amybe other supplies to start a local school based youth coin collecting club. I've often thought about giving back to my community but cannot find the time for Kiwanis or Shriners, etc. This would be excellent for me to pursue if I had a little backing. Any ides out there? Thanks.
that's a good idea. I wouldn't post that kind of info on a thread but would send it via pm to a trusted member or admin. Do all kids even get student I.D.'s?
The problem with the checking of ages with anyone is all the things going on with the internet with the weirdo after kids. This makes most parents and teachers real leary of anyone attempting to find out information about kids. As to where you could find info about coins for students in school. If possible stop in a school and discuss with the teachers or principals. Then if they didn't mind send some letters to coin magazines using that schools letterhead on the papers. Request any possible articles, magazines, pamphlets, folders, etc. for the schools. Send such requests to places like the PCGS, NGC, etc companies. Then also to Whitman, Dansco, Littleton and other coin items suppliers. Then naturally send to Coin World, Numismatic Magazine and other magazines. Might sound like a lot of work but might really pay off. For example one of the coin shows I go to always has tables in front full of coin magazines such as the ones I've mentioned. I once asked if the coin show pays for those and was told they are donated due to lettered request from the show personal.
