Long time listener, first time caller.

Query: how have people been reacting to the new uncirculated sets? This is actually the first time i've purchased an uncirculated set, and it seems to me that the new satin finish sort of misses the mark. Now, i don't have any complaints re: quality. The mint does a pretty decent job on that front -- not perfect, but pretty good -- and charges not unreasonable prices. It just strikes me that the point of an uncirculated set is to collect examples of a particular year's coinage prior to release into the stream of commerce. This satin set is lovely, but they seem more akin to "proof light" -- they're all there, but they're not what you'd find in your pockets. Granted, this will make them easier to spot when someone (cringe!) breaks the set and spends them [i've always wondered what people are thinking when they do this], but that's not really the point.

anyway, they're still nice coins, and i'll be curious to see how the coin market feels about this first set of satin finish coins in a few years, but i guess i just don't "get it."

btw, if i missed the thread where youse guys were talking about this earlier -- sorry, i looked. pls chalk it up to bein' a noob.

Things were just rearranged here at CT a couple days ago - so it might be hard to find the new location for a few posts.

    Welcome Vercingetorix.
I have only purchased the Uncirculated Sets for 2004 and 2005 due to the nickels. I have seen them before and was aware of them but I collect Proof and Silver Proof sets . I personally don't like the new satin finish because the Unc set was supposed to be just that; the best business strikes you could find. Very much BU. My personal belief is that the Mint wants more money so now anyone who collects circulated coins will have to buy a roll or two from the Mint (or a bank) to get their coins. The way they did it before was to buy a Unc set and cut it up to get their coins. Thats where you see Unc set coins going into circulation; they were the 'left overs'.

wouldn't always be more valuable to leave the coins as an intact set? you'd still have X coin (your nickel or dime or whatever you were looking for in unc), but you'd have your "leftovers," too, and the added value of the set in packaging. am i wrong in assuming that the set is more valuable than all of the constituent coins w/o packaging?

thanks for the welcomes, and responses!

I guess it depends upon your mind-set in collecting. I have several friends who have unc collections and it doesn't seem to be important to them to have the set. They want to fill the holes in their collection so they cut up the sets and even crack proof set to get their coins. The 'left-overs' are either traded or sold. One individual sends in some of the coins that are not needed for his sets to be graded and then he sells or trades them. I believe that the set is more valuable that its individual pieces but they are of a different mind.

As a general rule, when it comes to value of mint or Proof sets - the sum of the parts can be greater than the whole. But there are specific sets where this is not the case.

Hi Vercingetorix, Welcome to the Forum,
Some collectors purchase quite a few sets looking for "perfect" examples to send it for grading. An MS 69 or 70 can quite often be worth all the sets that they bought.

I've only seen one 2005 set so far. I'm not impressed.
