I've been looking for a nice example of one of these for several years and finally had the opportunity to buy one last week in a NGC AU-58 grade.
The coin has a superb lustre, strong strike on the devices and almost prooflike fields therefore unfortunately :(all markings in the fields are very pronounced and noticeable .. but overall I'm very pleased because the eye appeal in hand is A-1 !!!!

.... by the way the Napoleon depicted on the coin is Lodewijk (Louis) Napoleon, brother of the famous Napoleon Bonaparte. This coin was issued under French control of the United Netherlands by Louis Napoleon, Brother of Napoleon Bonaparte (1806-1810). As King, Louis placed his subjects’ welfare ahead of his bother’s request. Because of this Napoleon deposed Louis in 1810and annexed the Netherlands into the French Empire!

This design type was minted for only 2 years (1808 & 1809) with a combined mintage of 282,870. A rare issue in this grade.

    NETHERLANDS - KINGDOM OF HOLLAND
    1808 Ducat

Silvereagle, that is another nice coin! congratulations. Difficult to see where that one can be improved. You can see some likeness to his brother on that coin.

I like Napoleonic coinage too, specially the coins minted in the name of Napoleon's other brother Jerome. He was crowned king of Wesphalia (Wesfalen) and minted coins using the french standard (Franc, Frank) for circulation in German-speaking lands.

    Regards,

    Eduard

PS-i think you should change your name to GoldEagle, or something like that, as you seem to have a preference for gold coinage!

Tickled ya got it :thumb: Great strike on that one :eat:

Well Eduard, let's just say the he picked the name a bit before his intense interest in gold. And yes, I played a small part in instigating that interest ;)

I was so content ....... until Doug came along .... Kiss

Regarding the name ..... although I have changed my collection focus I do enjoy the contridiction "silver vs gold" so I'm deciding to leave it as silvereagle82

    Great coin.

I've been reading a lot about that time period lately for my genealogy research (my 4th Great Grandfather was from Dillenburg, Nassau military and in Dutch military service as part of the 1st bat/Regiment Oranje Nassau, No. 2 in Breda in the early 1790's) so I find it particularly interesting.

    Amazing coin. Congrats.

I too am attracted to gold. Unfortunately, that attraction is largely surpassed by my inability to afford it. :(
